
Deacs Drop Matchup with North Carolina

Penna Leads with 24
Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team (9-8, 0-4 ACC) dropped a road contest to the North Carolina Tar Heels (10-8, 1-3 ACC), 84-61, Thursday night in Chapel Hill. Elisa Penna led all scorers with 24 points for the Deacs. Guard Taylor Koenen led North Carolina with 21 points. Penna's 24 points marks her 18th career game with 20 points or more and fifth of the season.
Guard Gina Conti put up 12 points to keep the offense going for Wake Forest. Also, Ivana Raca scored seven points with 10 rebounds and Ona Udoh got rolling late, adding eight points and eight boards for the Deacs. Along with Koenen, four other players scored double-figures for North Carolina.
The Tar Heels pushed the pace early with 10 fast break points in the first period, extending their lead to 12 inside Carmichael Arena. North Carolina connected on eight three-pointers in the first half, led by Koenen (15 first-half points) and Stephanie Watts (14 points), to take a 56-18 lead into the break.
Wake Forest didn't let the slow start deter their confidence going into the third. Solid team defense flipped some momentum and shots started falling. Despite the defeat, the Deacs outscored the Tar Heels 43-28 in the second half.
Up next, the Deacs host #4 Louisville on Sunday, January 20 at LJVM Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
