Demon Deacons Close Non-Conference Action with Win Over Cornell

Jaylen Hoard dropped a career-high 23 points and 15 rebounds in the win

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest (7-5) closed out non-conference play on Wednesday evening, downing Cornell 83-61 at the LJVM Coliseum.
 
Jaylen Hoard recorded his third career double-double, tallying a career-high 23 points and tying a career-best with 15 boards. Brandon Childress posted 14 points and a career-high six boards, while Chaundee Brown added 12 points and six rebounds.
 
Wake Forest jumped out to a 15-3 lead fueled by an 11-0 run to open the game, and held the Big Red scoreless for just under five minutes.
 
The game of runs continued for the Deacons as Wake Forest went on a 13-0 run, tying a season-best, to push its lead to 37-19 with under one minute remaining in the half. The run was sparked by back-to-back baskets from Hoard and an And-1 from Olivier Sarr. Wake Forest took a 37-22 lead into the break, its largest lead at halftime this season. Hoard entered double-figure scoring early with 14 points in the first .
 
Ikenna Smart got the second half underway with a dunk, while Hoard extended the Deacs' lead to 22 with jumper with 16 minutes on the clock. After shooting 50 percent in the first half, the Demon Deacons sustained the solid lead, shooting 53 percent in the second frame.
 
Cornell (6-8) threatened late with an 11-0 run, but it wasn't enough as the Deacons held on to a 74-58 advantage with just over three minutes of action remaining. Michael Wynn notched his first collegiate points, a triple, and Anthony Bilas drove to the basket for a backhanded layup for his first points of his career with just seconds left on the clock to seal the 83-61 victory.  
 
The Deacons dominated the battle of the boards, out-rebounding the Big Red 50-25. Wake Forest also notched 15 second chance points, while holding Cornell to just three.
 
The Deacs travel to Atlanta to open ACC play against Georgia Tech on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m.
