Deacs Fall Short in ITA Kick-Off Weekend Championship

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Wake Forest women's tennis (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season, 4-0 to No. 14 South Carolina (2-1) on Sunday in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Championship.
The Deacons opened the match with a doubles win on court three as Anna Brylin and Anna Ulyashchenko powered through with a 6-4 victory to put the pressure on the Gamecocks. South Carolina responded with a 6-4 win of its own on court one as all eyes turned to court two to clinch the doubles point. Eliza Omirou and MC Meredith battled, but fell 7-6 in a tiebreak as South Carolina took the early 1-0 advantage.Momentum remained in the Gamecocks' favor in singles play as USC won the first set on all six courts. Paige Cline gave South Carolina a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 decision on court two and another point came across for the Gamecocks on court five.
The Deacons rallied in the second frame as Emma Davis notched a 6-2 win, Eliza Omirou evened the match on court three with a 6-1 decision, Saby Nihalani and Chandler Carter each posted a 6-4 set two victory on courts four and six, respectively.
South Carolina's Mia Horvit clinched the win and a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships for the Gamecocks, defeating Omirou 6-3 in the final set.
Wake Forest will return home for a double header on Saturday, Feb. 9 against William and Mary and Western Carolina.
