Wake Forest’s offense rewrites the history books as comeback falls short
Â
Saturday's game between the Demon Deacons (5-1, 1-1 ACC) and the Cardinals (4-2, 2-1 ACC) featured the most combined points in school history (121), the most first downs (40), the second most total offense yards in a game (668), and the fourth most total plays (102).
Â
Quarterback Jamie Newman had three touchdown passes, quarterback Sam Hartman had two touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown, and wide receiver Sage Surratt had three touchdown catches to go with 196 yards receiving.
Â
Trailing 45-31 at the start of the fourth quarter, Wake Forest and Louisville slugged it out in the second-highest scoring game in ACC history. After several scores and back-and-forth action, Wake Forest attempted an onside kick and after a chaotic scramble, Louisville recovered and escaped with the win.
Â
How it Happened:
Louisville scored first off a rushing touchdown early in the first quarter following a Wake Forest turnover. The Cardinals added another touchdown midway through the quarter as they extended their lead to 14-0.
Â
Wake Forest responded with a 13-play, 75-yard drive that featured several critical catches from wide receiver Kendall Hinton. Surratt caught a 12-yard contested throw for a touchdown as the Deacons pulled within one score. Louisville retook the momentum on the ensuing kickoff with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Cardinals tacked on another touchdown at the start of the second quarter making it a 28-7 lead.
Â
Surratt caught his second touchdown of the day on a three-yard strike from Newman on the next drive. Wake Forest was methodical on the seven-play, 74-yard drive that lasted just 2:24. Â On Louisville's next possession, quarter back Micale Cunningham scrambled and was hit by Nasir Greer, causing a fumble which was recovered by Traveon Redd to the Louisville 4-yard line. Three plays later, Cade Carney rushed for a 1-yard touchdown as the Deacons pulled within one score.
Â
The Cardinals tacked on a field goal and held a 31-21 lead at halftime. Louisville scored out of the gate in the third quarter and led 38-21.
Â
Later in the third, Newman hit Surratt with a 47-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline as Wake Forest made it a 38-28 lead. Again the Cardinals responded with an 8-yard touchdown followed by a Nick Sciba 34-yard field goal as Wake Forest trailed 45-31. After a 50-yard touchdown for Louisville, Kenneth Walker III scored a three-yard touchdown.
Â
Trailing 55-38 with 5:35 left in the game, Hartman replaced an injured Newman and drove down the field and completed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Scotty Washington. Wake Forest recovered the onside kick following the touchdown and Hartman passed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jake Freudenthal.
Â
Louisville scored a touchdown on its next drive and made it 62-52 with 2:15 left in the game. Hartman again led a scoring drive and finished it himself with a 1-yard rushing touchdown with just 1:10 remaining. Trailing 62-59, Wake Forest attempted another onside kick but Louisville recovered and ended the game.
Â
Key Play:
After a fourth quarter that featured a combined 45 points between the two teams, Wake Forest's last onside kick with 1:10 remaining was ruled to be recovered by Louisville. After a lengthy replay, the officials ruled that the play stood.
Â
Stat Leaders:
Newman finished with 251 yards passing and three touchdown passes while Hartman had two touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown with 172 yards passing. Beal-Smith set a career-high with 123 yards on the ground while Carney tallied 95 yards plus a touchdown.
Â

Â
Justin Strnaud racked up nine tackles while Carlos Basham, Jr. and Ja'Corey Johns each had three tackles for loss.Â
