Wake Falls to Clemson in Three Sets

Clemson, S.C. – Wake Forest volleyball (11-8, 1-7 ACC) fell to Clemson (9-10, 3-5), 3-0 (16-25, 14-25, 22-25) on the road on Sunday evening.
Wake struggled to find an answer to timely kills and a .333 hitting percentage from the Tigers. Clemson registered 44 kills while Wake tallied 22.
The Deacons were led offensively by senior Caitlyn Della with eight kills, while redshirt freshman Abby Krueger posted five kills. Junior setter Haley Kortekaas collected a career-best and team-high 11 assists. Caitlin Clarke led the defensive efforts with 10 digs and also added two service aces.
Wake Forest got off to a rough start hitting -.172 in the first set. Clemson capitalized on Wake's attacking errors to take a 15-3 kill advantage in the frame. Errors on both sides of the net kept the set close early, but Clemson pulled away late with a 7-0 run to win the first frame 25-16.
The momentum stayed on the Tigers' side of the court as Clemson hit a match-high .600 in the second set with 13 kills and just one error. The Tigers went on an early 9-0 run to jump in front 10-2 before Wake got back within four following a 4-0 run. Clemson remained in front for the remainder of the stanza and used a 4-0 run of its own to take a 2-0 match lead, winning the set 25-16.
The Deacons responded with a .385 clip in the final frame, but it wasn't enough as Clemson recorded 16 kills to Wake's 11. Both sides rallied back-and-forth and tied the frame at 10-all. The Tigers took a narrow lead with a 3-0 run and managed to stay in front for the remainder of the set, sealing the sweep with the 25-22 decision.
Wake will be back in action for a midweek tilt against in-state foe Duke on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. The match will air on ACC Network.
