Good afternoon Demon Deacon Nation,

Greetings from Atlanta where today Wake Forest is the only school in the country to have both its men's and women's teams competing for the 2019 East Lake Cup! This event is reserved for only the most elite in college golf, with the field selected from the top eight finishers in last spring's NCAA men's and women's championships.  The No. 2 ranked Wake Forest men will battle Texas, Oklahoma State and Vanderbilt while the No. 5 Deacon women take on Duke, Arizona and Auburn in a unique 3-day stroke and match-play style competition. You can watch live on the Golf Channel this afternoon through Wednesday from 3-6 p.m. or if you are in the Atlanta area come out and watch the very best in college golf for free by clicking here. Best of luck to both of our teams!

This past weekend in Winston-Salem was action-packed and was highlighted by women's soccer's OT win over Pittsburgh Thursday night, No. 20 field hockey's 5-0 shutout of Appalachian State on Sunday and hosting the ITA Carolina Regionals in which 130 players from 23 schools competed at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. Sophomore Carolyn Campana advanced to the semifinals as did our doubles team of Eliza Omirou and MC Meredith.  And, with the fall sports stretch run upon us we have lots to cover in today's update.

A Day with the Deacs Will Be Your First Look at Basketball
Saturday morning before the football game,  come on over to the Joel and get a free pre-season look at the men's basketball team in action. First-Ever Heather Holmes Tenacity Award Presented to Volleyball's Caitlin Clarke
The first-ever Heather Holmes Tenacity Award was presented to senior Caitlin Clarke yesterday prior to the match against Virginia Tech. Established in memory of the late former Wake Forest volleyball coach Heather Holmes, this award is presented to the Deacon volleyball player who best embodies Heather's tenacious and indomitable spirit —and who displays characteristics such as persistence, grit, kindness, passion and leadership. We were honored to have Heather's husband, Michael, and son, Landon, on hand for the award presentation. Come check out volleyball's two home matchups on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. (NC State) and Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. (UNC).

Unique Deac & Forest Friday - WF Student-Athletes Have Active Week on Campus
Last Thursday, helping mark NCAA Inclusion Week, our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's student-athlete outreach group (SAOG), in partnership with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, helped organize and host the first-ever Unique Deac Day to help build connections between all students on campus. Unique Deac Day provided an opportunity for the Wake Forest community to publicly share, see, understand, and value differences. Participants were able to share stories, connect, self-reflect and be a part of the UniqueDeac Photo Project.

Friday afternoon SAOG student-athletes hosted another Forest Friday for all Wake Forest students.  Nearly 200 students and student-athletes enjoyed fellowship, games and end-of-the week treats from a dessert food truck. I appreciate the leadership of our student-athletes helping to build a stronger campus community. Click here for pictures from both events.

Wake Forest Researchers Score $24M Federal Grant For Innovative Study
Recently I was treated to an incredible tour of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Tony Atala and his team are international leaders in translating scientific discovery into clinical therapies and are working to grow tissues and organs and develop healing cell therapies for more than 30 different areas of the body, from kidney and trachea to cartilage and lung. You can read more here about the announcement of $24 million federal grant for their innovative "lung-on-a-chip" regenerative medicine technology for chemical injury treatments. Right here in Winston-Salem's Innovation Quarter Dr. Atala and other Wake Forest scientists are literally changing the world!  And, he's a big Demon Deacon sports fan too!
