Deacs Top Syracuse, 3-1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Wake Forest volleyball (11-3, 1-2 ACC) picked up its first ACC victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Syracuse on Friday night.
Peyton Suess led the way at the net for the Deacs, tallying her fifth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 11 digs. Setter Madeline Holt collected 33 assists and libero Catlin Clarke had a team-best 15 digs. Freshman Zoe Gonzales was a defensive force registering one solo block and seven assisted blocks.
"The team stayed focused throughout the match tonight," interim head coach Randi Smart said. "Syracuse is a physical team and we wanted to make sure we knew what we wanted to do on our side. Caitlin Clarke led us defensively and kept us stable tonight. Zoe came up with a few big blocks at great times."
Despite hitting just .192 and tallying only 37 kills compared to Cuse's 58 kills, Wake was able to take advantage of Syracuse miscues to earn the 3-1 victory. The Orange had 27 attack errors and 15 service errors that lifted the Deacs to their first ACC win.
Wake started off strong with a .318 hitting percentage in the first set to go along with three aces and four total blocks. Suess paced the way with five kills to lift the Deacs to a 25-19 set one victory to take an early 1-0 match lead.
Syracuse rallied back in the second set, winning 25-17 to even the match at 1-1. Wake managed just six kills in the frame, hitting a match-low .034 while the Orange tallied 14 kills and a .276 clip.
The Deacs stormed back to take the final two sets. Wake took the lead early in the third set and maintained control, only allowing Syracuse to tie the frame at 4-4, before regaining the lead for the remainder of the set. Suess notched six kills in the frame, while Holt and Peyton Washington each added two services aces.
Wake wrapped the match with a thrilling fourth set win. Syracuse faced set point, leading 24-22, but the Deacs battled back winning five straight points to defeat the Orange 26-24. The set featured 16 ties and seven lead changes. Gonzales gave Wake the 25-24 go-ahead lead with a kill and sealed the victory with a block as Wake won the fourth set 26-24.
The Demon Deacons continue ACC play on the road as they take on Boston College on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. The match will air on ACCNX.
