
No. 6 Virginia Tops No. 20 Wake Forest, 3-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Sixth-ranked Virginia field hockey defeated No. 20 Wake Forest 3-1 on Friday evening at Kentner Stadium. Sophomore Laia Vancells scored the lone goal for the Demon Deacons in the contest.
Virginia got off to a hot start as Laura Janssen scored the opening goal at 13:47 mark to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. Fewer than 8 minutes later, Cato Geusgens scored her first of two goals in the game in what would be the decisive goal at the 20:47 mark to push Virginia ahead 2-0 heading into the break.
Undaunted, Vancells put the Deacs on the board at the 37:50 mark with an unassisted goal right after the half, tapping the ball in right past the keeper from close range.
Neusgens would put the match away at the 47:44 mark, as her second goal of the match would give the Cavaliers a 3-1 victory.
Virginia tripled the Deacs shot attempts as it held a 9-3 advantage. The Cavaliers also enjoyed a 4-1 corner advantage.
Isla Bint (8-10) made three saves in the game.
Wake Forest will face the Richmond Spiders Sunday at Kentner Stadium to wrap up the regular season. The match will begin at 1 p.m., and the four seniors will be honored prior to the match.
