No. 20 Wake Defeats Richmond 4-0 on Senior Day

11/3/2019 5:14:00 PM | Field Hockey

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey dominated its regular season finale on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Richmond Spiders, 4-0. Prior the the game, seniors Isla Bint, Nthabi Maine, Kelsey Gill and Jess Pianko were honored.

"This gives us tremendous confidence heading into the ACC Tournament," head coach Jennifer Averill said. "We have been struggling all season to find ourselves and I felt like today was a big defining moment. It is always special on Senior Day. I felt throughout the lines we had a special awareness going on and we moved the ball incredibly well. The goals are great, but the goals are a byproduct of our ability to move the ball. We had some vision and structure off the ball and then defensively, we hammered home having pride in our individual defense."

After a scoreless first period, the Deacs opened the scoring as sophomore Abby Carpenter recorded her second goal of the season off a pass from freshman Maggie Dickman late in the period, giving the Deacs the 1-0 advantage at the half.

Wake Forest (9-10) started the second half aggressive as they got off four shot attempts in the third, capitalizing on two opportunities with goals from sophomore Grace Sambrook and Gill early in the third quarter, taking a 3-0 lead less than midway through the period. Sambrook's goal was unassisted as she found the back of the net on the reflection of a penalty corner. Alexis Grippo fed Gill in close range to the net to boost the Deacs to the 3-0 advantage.

The Deacs continued it offensive push as Grippo closed the regular season scoring an unassisted goal with just five minutes remaining, totaling three points in the game.

Goalie Bint had an outstanding performance with 6 saves as she kept the Spiders off the board for her fifth shutout victory of the year.

The Demon Deacons and the Spiders were even on goal opportunities as both teams had 10 shots and 5 penalty corners.

Up next, the Demon Deacons will travel to Massachusetts for the ACC Tournament hosted by Boston College. The Deacs are the No. 7 seed and will battle second-seeded BC on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 2:30 p.m.
