
Boston College Outlasts Wake Forest in Five-Set Battle

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Caitlyn Della and Peyton Suess each tallied 15 kills, but the Deacs dropped their final home match against Boston College 3-2 on Senior Day Sunday.
Caroline Kuhn also had a double-digit kill performance collecting 10. Parker Kwiatkowski added 45 assists and senior Caitlin Clarke notched 24 digs in the loss.
Wake Forest got off to a dominant start, making several strong runs in the first set, hitting an impressive .474 for the frame. The Deacs opened the match on a 5-0 run to take an 8-5 lead. Back-to-back kills and a block from Caitlyn Della put Wake in front 23-18. Della finished the set with eight kills and a .800 hitting percentage to give Wake Forest the early 1-0 lead with a 25-18 opening set victory.
Boston College answered back, winning the second set 25-20. Each side battled back and forth, but a 4-0 run from the Eagles gave Boston College a 16-11 lead. Wake pulled within three multiple times but back-to-back kills from the Eagles' Jill Strokis evened the match at 1-1.
After hitting just .054 in the second set, the Deacons made adjustments and hit a match-high .480 in the third set to win the stanza 25-16. A block from Kwiatkowski and Della gave Wake a 7-6 advantage. A 3-0 run lifted Wake to a 11-7 lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the frame. Caroline Kuhn added a kill to give Wake a nine point lead. A kill from Suess handed Wake the third set win to regain a 2-1 match advantage.
The Eagles hit .321 in the fourth frame and held the Deacs to just a .094 clip. A 6-0 run for the Demon Deacons cut Boston College's lead to one, 14-13. BC used a six-kill performance from Jewel Strawberry to take the fourth set 25-18, forcing a fifth and final set.
Wake's five-set effort fell just short as Boston College capped the match with a 15-8 victory in the final frame. The Eagles' Clare Naughton posted four kills in the stanza to lift Boston College to the 3-2 win. Wake's offense struggled, hitting .042, its lowest hitting percentage of the match, while the Eagles managed a .300 clip to seal the victory.
The Deacs will finish the 2019 season on the road, taking on Virginia Tech on Sunday, Nov. 24 and capping the season against in-state foe North Carolina on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
