11/3/2019 5:02:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Charlottesville, Va. – Wake Forest volleyball fell to Virginia, 3-1 on Sunday at Memorial Gym.

Freshman Peyton Suess led the Deacs with 12 kills and added seven digs. Caitlin Clarke tallied a team-best 10 digs and freshman Parker Kwiatkowsi notched 37 assists to go along with a career-best six kills.

Wake (11-12, 1-11 ACC) started strong taking the first set 25-21. The Deacons hit .286 in the first frame, capitalizing with 15 kills. Back-to-back attacking errors from the Cavaliers put Wake in front 6-3 early.

Virginia tied the frame at 10-10 and continued to battle point for point. The Deacons managed a 18-15 lead later in the set, forcing Virginia to burn a timeout. The momentum remained with the Deacs as a 3-0 run put Wake Forest on top 21-15. Virginia put a few more points on the board, but Suess sealed the set one decision with a kill to give Wake Forest the 1-0 match lead.

After hitting just .138 in the first set Virginia (10-15, 2-10 ACC) bounced back to progressively get better throughout the match. The Cavs featured three players with double-digit kills, led by Jayna Francis and Sarah Billiard with 11 each. The Hoos hit .26 in the second set while holding the Deacs to a .061 clip. Wake found answered to Virginia's hitting early in the set, but a few Deacon miscues put the momentum on the Cavs' side as Virginia evened the match 1-1 with a 25-16 second set.

Virginia continued its offensive progression, hitting .287 in the third set and .438 in the fourth and final frame. The Cavs notched 15 kills in each of the final two sets and had only one error in the fourth set to defeat the Deacs 25-11 and 3-1 overall.

Wake returns home for a pair of in-state rivalry matches, taking on NC State on Friday, Nov. 8, followed by North Carolina on Sunday Nov. 10. Admission to all Wake Forest volleyball games is free.
