
NC State Edges Wake Forest in Five Setter

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Despite a balanced offensive effort, Wake Forest volleyball fell in a five-set thriller (20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 16-25, 15-12) on Friday at Reynolds Gym. Caroline Kuhn led the Deacs with 14 kills, but Michelle Polechonski also impressed with a career-best 13 kill performance, Caitlyn Della rounded out the double-digit kills with 12.
Wake Forest (11-13, 1-12 ACC) got off to a string start behind five kills from Polechonski in the first set. Wake hit .289 in the stanza and held the Pack to a .100 clip. The first frame featured 10 ties and five lead changes, but it was Wake Forest who came out on top 25-20. The Deacons finished the opening set on a 7-1 run to take the 1-0 match lead.
The Wolfpack answered right back, winning the second set 25-22. The Deacons hit just .114 in the frame. The second set also had 10 ties as both teams battled for the lead. Della and Olivia Saunders each had three kills in the stanza on five attempts for .400 hitting percentages. A block from Della and Kuhn put the Deacs within one at 21-20, but State answered back with a block of its own to take the set 25-22, evening the match.
The Pack gained a 2-1 match lead with a narrow 25-23 decision in the third set. Three Deacs posted four kills, but errors stumped Wake and allowed NC State to take advantage despite a .067 hitting percentage.
Redshirt freshman Abby Krueger stepped up for the Deacons in the fourth set with four kills and three blocks in addition to three service aces allowed Wake Forest to even the game, downing the Wolfpack 25-16 in the fourth stanza to force just the Deacs' third five-set match of the season.
The Demon Deacons hit a match-high .368 in the fifth set, but NC Stated edged them with a .389 clip. Wake Forest trailed for most of the set but pulled within two at 14-12. A kill from State's Jessica Kemp sealed the five-set victory for NC State.
Wake Forest will continue its four match homestand hosting another in-state opponent, North Carolina on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. Admission to all Wake Forest home volleyball matches is free.
