Good morning Deacon Nation!

Today the last edits to From the Quad are actually "from Logan Airport" as Associate AD Mike Piscetelli and I are heading south from Boston to see a few Wake Forest friends in northern Virginia before driving to Roanoke to catch up with football in advance of our big 3:30 p.m. ACC Network clash at Virginia Tech tomorrow afternoon. November is perhaps the busiest month for college athletics as we have a collision of our fall sports racing into championship season and our basketball teams launching into their campaigns. And, while the operations staff is putting on five events in one day — see below for this week's "Super Sunday" details — our academic staff is helping 430 or so student-athletes gear up for final exams right around the corner! We appreciate all these folks working behind the scenes to provide a World Class Student-Athlete Experience!

For the first time ever, the Demon Deacons have entered the College Football Playoff discussion as we rank 19th in the inaugural CFP poll unveiled earlier this week! With four weeks left in the regular season, there is a lot to be excited about—we're bowl bound for the 4th consecutive year, we're in the ACC race, and on Nov. 23 we get to celebrate an incredible group of seniors as the Deacs take on Duke on Senior Day. Tickets start at just $20, so encourage your fellow Wake family & fans to get their Duke tickets today and be at BB&T Field as our seniors take the field at home for the last time and fight to capture the Big Four Championship!

Meanwhile out on the West Coast, MC Meredith & Eliza Omirou captured a big doubles win in the ITA round of 16 and will compete in the quarterfinals today at 6:30 p.m. EST, and tonight back in Winston-Salem, volleyball takes on NC State at 6 p.m. in Varsity Gym.

It's a busy week for the Deacs, so let's get on with the updates...

ACC Basketball is Back!
Basketball has begun and we have a split in our opening games as our women started their season off with a 65-55 victory over UNCW at the Joel on Tuesday night. They're in action at home again tonight at 7 p.m. against College of Charleston. In Boston we saw the men's team fight back in the second half before falling to Boston College in the first of 20 ACC games in our league's new expanded schedule.

Men's basketball season tickets are still available, and we also have several package deals including Pick 5 and Pick 7, the Best Darn Package, and a "Big Four" three-game package. Single game tickets are now on-sale to the general public as well, and remember that we're still offering the innovative Deacon Mobile Pass which gets you easy access to every men's and women's home game for only $200. ACC Men's Soccer, Volleyball, and More on "Super Sunday"
This Sunday is going to be a busy day for the Deacs! In addition to the basketball doubleheader, there will be plenty of other sports action around campus. No. 7 men's soccer earned the No. 3 seed in the ACC Championship and will host Virginia Tech Sunday at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinal round at home in Spry Stadium. Tickets for the ACC Quarterfinal match are $10 for adults (age 19+) and $5 for youths (ages 4-18). College students are free with a valid student I.D. With a big crowd expected, an advance purchase and "print at home" is recommended.  Click here to purchase your tickets now!

At 1 p.m. on Sunday, volleyball will take on UNC, and over at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex, men's tennis will be hosting the Wake Forest Fall Invitational today through Sunday.

Demon Deacons Give Back at Project Pumpkin
Wake Forest Athletics joined with more than 90 student groups to participate in the University's 31st annual Project Pumpkin festival as more than 800 children from local schools and agencies converged on the Sutton Center for candy, fun and a good time. Project Pumpkin is a signature event at Wake Forest and one that Winston-Salem children look forward to every year. Students, staff and faculty work together to provide a carnival-like atmosphere for children, complete with trick-or-treating, games and prizes, educational activities and clowns. The event, which is usually held outdoors on Hearn Plaza, was held indoors this year due to heavy rain. The theme was Planet Pumpkin, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 Moon Landing, to educate children about the Space Project. Click here for a great photo story on the event.

Athletics Student Leadership Council
On October 24, we held the inaugural meeting of the Athletics Student Leadership Council, a diverse group of Wake Forest students who are committed to helping create a "best-in-class" student experience at home athletic contests to enhance the overall game atmosphere. This group is made up of students who are affiliated with more than 60 student groups on campus including Screamin' Demons, the marching band, Greek organizations, and student-athletes from several athletic teams including football, field hockey and track and field. We had a great meeting, during which the group shared some helpful insights and their thoughts on the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities associated with the student experience at Wake Forest Athletics events. This is a smart, passionate and motivated group of young men and women and I look forward to their leadership and input as we strive to create the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina

Cross Country Teams Take 5th & 6th at ACC Championships - Ready for NCAA Regionals
The Wake Forest men's and women's cross country teams captured fifth and sixth place, respectively, at the ACC Championships held last week in Blacksburg, Va. The men's team tied for their best finish since 2005, while the women's team had its second best showing since 2008. Earning All-ACC honors for the Demon Deacons were sophomore Zach Facioni and team captain Jack Tiernan, and on the women's side, it was sophomore Elise Wright and senior Samantha Halvorsen.

The Deacs travel to Charlottesville, Va. on Nov. 15 for the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships. The top two teams from nine regions will automatically qualify for the Nov. 23 NCAA Championships with another 13 teams chosen as at-large selections.

The Road to the NCAA Field Hockey Championship Leads to Winston-Salem
Although our season ended with a tough first-round loss in the ACC Championship yesterday, Wake Forest is honored to be hosting the 2019 NCAA Field Hockey Championship November 22-24th at Kentner Stadium. This is a great opportunity for Wake Forest and the Winston-Salem community to showcase our town and hospitality as we welcome fans to this elite national event. Deacs at Clemson Set for 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 16
The Deacs will travel to Clemson to take on the No. 5 Tigers on Nov. 16. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. in front of another national audience on either ABC or ESPN.

A Character Study
Wake Forest's President, Dr. Nathan Hatch, has been quoted as saying that one of his highest priorities is ensuring Wake Forest is a place which develops students into leaders of character. Within athletics, where leadership is one of our department's core values, there are countless examples of strong leaders, but it's inspiring to look around our University and see how others put this commitment into practice. Recently, Wake Forest Magazine asked several faculty and staff how they imbue leadership and character lessons in their work with students. To read the thoughts of Dave Clawson and others, click here

I know we'll have lots of Deacon fans cheering on the team in Blacksburg tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.! Remember to send me your thoughts and questions at wfuad@wfu.edu and follow along on twitter @John_Currie. Thanks for your support!
