Good Morning, Deacon Nation!
Happy December! We have lots to share today as we head into another Big Deacon Weekend so let's get right to the updates.
First up, and always most important here at Wake Forest, exams are upon us! Our students and student-athletes are wrapping up papers, group projects and presentations and gearing up for finals — it is a stressful time, but fortunately, Wake Forest's Division of Campus Life, led by vice-president Penny Rue, has an excellent support system in place for all. Our senior associate AD for student-athlete services, Jane Caldwell, and her staff, do a wonderful job of helping our student-athletes balance academic priorities amongst a bunch of big games coming up. Finally — hats off to our faculty who will be burning the midnight oil to sum up the work of 5,000 undergraduate students for posting of final grades!
As you are out and about on the highways of North Carolina, you will likely notice new billboards celebrating our football program's eighth Big 4 Championship with wins over UNC, NC State & Duke this fall. Wake Forest football now boasts a record of 30-18 against those ACC rivals since the beginning of the 21st century. And bowl selection is this Sunday, and we can't wait to find out where Deacon Nation will gather for a record fourth-straight bowl game. Fans can tune into ESPN for the selection show, but check www.GoDeacs.com and follow @WakeFB and @DemonDeacons as we'll push out the news as soon as it's confirmed and provide more details on tickets, travel packages and special bowl-related events.
Super Saturday - Men's Basketball ACC Opener at 2 p.m., Men's Soccer Elite 8 Match at 5 p.m.
Tomorrow is a big day for the Deacs! ACC basketball action returns to the Joel as our men's team takes on NC State in its ACC home opener. After the game, head over to Spry to cheer on men's soccer as they look to advance to another College Cup. This is the team's fourth quarterfinal appearance in five years — that is an impressive accomplishment! The Deacs will take on UC Santa Barbara at 5 p.m. Let's pack Spry Stadium and support their quest for another national championship. Purchase your tickets in advance by clicking here.
Celebrating LJVM Coliseum's 30 Year Impact on Winston-Salem and Wake Forest
Tomorrow we formally launch the season-long celebration of 30 years of the LJVM Coliseum with a pre-game event with the community leaders who were instrumental in making a new Coliseum a reality. A pre-game reception will be held in the Allegacy Club Room at noon during which I will lead a panel discussion with community leaders including Mayor Allen Joines, former Coliseum manager Bucky Dame and original Coliseum Commission member Robert Egleston, Wake Forest leaders including Reid Morgan, and John Lambert, a Deacon Club leader and campaign volunteer for the Advantage Campaign which helped make the LJVM Coliseum possible. During the game we will recognize key leaders including longtime Wake Forest athletics director Gene Hooks, coach Dave Odom, and the family of the late University president Dr. Thomas Hearn — just to name a few. All members of the first basketball team to compete in the LJVM Coliseum have been invited — I can't wait to see Sam Ivy, Ralph Kitley and many others back on the court!
The LJVM Coliseum has been an integral component of the greater Winston-Salem and Triad community since 1989 — hosting concerts, conventions, community meetings and sporting events, including four NCAA Tournament events, six CIAA Tournaments and the 2007 Davis Cup quarterfinals. As many as 75,000 local high school students have received their diplomas in the Joel and, of course, there have been countless memorable Wake Forest basketball moments. Join us Saturday afternoon to say "thank you" to those who helped it all get started. Click here for tickets.
Bob McCreary is an ACC Legend
He's already legendary in the eyes of the Wake Forest faithful, but Bob McCreary is now being recognized as an ACC Legend.Bob will represent Wake Forest as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Legends class tonight in Charlotte. His life story epitomizes the power of athletics to transform lives. His own opportunities were expanded thanks to a football scholarship, and now, through his leadership and generosity, he is transforming the lives of a new generation. I can't think of anyone more deserving of being recognized as an ACC Legend.
Student-Athletes Embody "Pro Humanitate" By Spreading Holiday Cheer
Chip Rives, a former Wake Forest football player, founded Santa's Helper in 1986 to help provide holiday presents to children in Winston-Salem, and again this year, student-athletes, coaches, staff, Deacon Club members, and friends of Wake Forest will gather today and tomorrow to wrap and deliver thousands of presents to underprivileged families. Santa's Helper now serves over 300 families and 1,000 children in the Winston-Salem community. Be sure to follow Santa's Helper on Facebook and Developing Deacs on Twitter & Instagram for photos and videos from this year's event.
Start Your Weekend Today at the Annual Wake Forest Artisans Fair
If you're looking for a unique holiday gift for family and friends, then come on over to the 15th annual WFU Artisans' Fair today, Friday, Dec. 6, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. in Benson Center 401. Over 35 vendors will show and sell their handcrafted products which include jewelry, woodworking, stitchery, pottery, baked goods, and more — all made by Wake Foresters. You can win door prizes too!
Experience a Special Wake Forest Holiday Tradition Sunday
Wake Forest is always a special place, but it truly shines during the holiday season. Our family is looking forward to the annual Wake Forest Lovefeast which celebrates a unique tradition of the Moravian community in Winston‑Salem. There are two services in Wait Chapel on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019 — a condensed version at 4:30 p.m. followed by the traditional service at 8 p.m. For more information, click here.
Volleyball Closes Strong
Finally, capped by a thrilling five-set victory over the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, volleyball closed out the season by winning three of our last four ACC matches. Coach Smart is pouring the foundation for a winning culture and with the core of her team returning, along with and excellent recruiting class, I'm excited for 2020.
As always, please keep your feedback coming to wfuad@wfu.edu. Be on the look-out for a special Bowl edition of From the Quad Sunday night!
