Deacs Stumble at Home Against Georgia Tech

2/10/2019 3:06:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Conti Adds 15; Dickson grabs career-high 11 rebounds

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team (10-14, 1-10 ACC) came up short, 60-46, to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (15-9, 5-6 ACC) on Sunday. Gina Conti led the way for the Demon Deacons with 15 points, along with four assists, three rebounds and three steals.

Ivana Raca added nine points for the Deacs. Maya Banks (six points, seven rebounds) and Kaylen Dickson (four points, 11 rebounds) impressed in starting roles. Christina Morra chipped in six points off the bench.

Wake Forest took advantage of Georgia Tech's struggles to open the contest. The Deacs led 8-2 in the first and the ball movement was key in their success. Banks was locked in out the gate, putting up four early points and controlling the glass with five rebounds. The Yellow Jackets seemed to wake up early in the second quarter, speeding it up on the offensive end.

With Georgia Tech picking up the pace, Raca and Conti used their chemistry as an advantage, creating a few plays in transition to keep the foot on the gas. The Deacs led by as many as six but the Yellow Jackets used a late 8-2 run to take a 25-18 lead into the break.

The Demon Deacons opened the second half with a 9-0 run, including a transition three from Raca and a highlight block from Banks on the other end. Half-court trap pressure from Dickson and Conti got Wake Forest into ideal situations on defense, leading to offensive mistakes from Georgia Tech.

The Deacs quickly took back the lead, 29-25 before forcing a Yellow Jacket timeout. Tech, led by Elizabeth Dixon (22 points) and Francesca Pan (15 points), found something during the timeout and surged out on a 15-2 run before the media timeout. Wake Forest tried to create a late surge of their own but the defensive pressure by Georgia Tech was enough to secure the win.

Up next, Wake Forest travels to New York for a conference matchup with the Syracuse Orange. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 17. Coverage will be provided by ACC Network Extra.
