The Demon Deacons advance to the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship
CHICAGO, Ill. – The top-ranked and third-seeded Demon Deacons opened their title defense at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship with a 4-2 victory over 12th-ranked and 14th-seeded Columbia, 4-2, at the Midtown Athletic Club in downtown Chicago.
Wake Forest (10-1) jumped out to the early advantage by taking the doubles point at the No. 2 and 3 positions. A late scratch by Borna Gojo forced Julian Zlobinsky into the doubles lineup where he and partner Alan Gadjiev cruised to a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot. It was a pair of freshman to clinch the point, as Siddhant Banthia and Melios Efstathiou posted a similar 6-3 result at the No. 3 spot, pushing the Deacs ahead 1-0.
Petros Chrysochos and Bar Botzer took the opening set at their No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, respectively, but Columbia (3-1) fought back by taking the first set at the No. 3-6 spots. Chrysochos quickly extended the advantage to 2-0 with a workmanlike 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 11 Jack Lin. Botzer followed in suit, topping No. 32 Adam Ambrozy, putting the Deacs a point away from victory.
Chrysochos' victory was the 119th of his career, matching the program for career singles wins. The mark of 119 wins was set last year by former teammate Skander Mansouri.
After Yuval Solomon fell at the No. 5 position, Efstathiou, Rrezart Cungu and Julian Zlobinsky each erased the early deficit they faced and pushed their respective matches to a third set.
Moments after Zlobinsky fell at the No. 6 spot, Cungu clinched the match for the Deacs. The sophomore quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead before closing out a 6-2 third-set victory.
Wake Forest faces No. 6 seed UCLA in the quarterfinals at 12 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, February 16.
