WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Wake Forest remains undefeated at home after downing Winthrop 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Deacs held the Eagles to just two set victories throughout the match. With the win, Wake improves to 6-1 on the season.
Emma Davis and Chandler Carter cruised to a 6-2 doubles victory on court one to get the momentum rolling for the Deacons. That win tied the top tandem for fifth all time in Wake history with 42 career doubles wins.
Court three went in favor of Winthrop to tie doubles up at 1-1 as all eyes turned to Eliza Omirou and MC Meredith on court two. The Wake Forest duo pulled away with a 7-5 victory to clinch the doubles point for the Deacs.
In singles action, Omirou put the Deacons on the board, defeating Megan Kauffman 6-1, 6-0 on court three. Peyton Pesavento downed Ellie Burns on court six, 6-0, 6-2 followed quickly by No. 122 Carter on court four, 6-2, 6-4 to push the Deacs' lead to 4-0, clinching the match.
The remaining matches played out as 51st-ranked Davis pulled away with a huge 6-2, 6-4 victory on court one over No. 32 Lauren Proctor. Freshman Saby Nihalani continued her impressive showing for the Deacs, fighting to a 6-4, 6-0 decision in the fourth spot.
No. 95 Ulyashchenko earned a 6-2 first set win on court two, but Winthrop's Alisa Soloveva rallied back to take set two 7-6 (5) and earned narrow 10-8 tiebreak win in place of the third set to give Winthrop it's lone point of the day.
Up next, the Deacons return to the WF Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 17 to open ACC play against Clemson. First serve is set for noon.
