Women’s Tennis Routs Clemson in ACC Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest women's tennis opened ACC competition with a 7-0 sweep over the Clemson Tigers on Sunday to wrap up a four-match home stretch.
The afternoon got underway with a thrilling doubles point that went in favor of the Deacons. Anna Brylin and Anna Ulyashchenko picked up a quick 6-1 victory on court three, but Emma Davis and Chandler Carter dropped a hard-fought 6-4 match to second-ranked Marie Leduc and Fernanda Navarro, knotting the doubles score up at 1-1.
Attention turned to the middle court where Eliza Omirou and MC Meredith battled back from a 5-3 deficit to send the match into a tiebreak. The Wake duo completed the rally with a 7-6 (4) win over the Tigers, giving the Deacons a 1-0 advantage.
Momentum remained with the Deacons as Chandler Carter pulled in the first singles win on court six, taking down Laura Marti, 6-1, 6-1. Brylin finished quickly after with a 6-1, 6-0 decision on court five as the Deacs took a 3-0 lead. Omirou clinched the match on court three with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Clemson's Sydney Riley.
No. 95 Anna Ulyashchenko topped No. 64 Fernanda Navarro, 6-4, 6-4 on the second court. After dropping the first frame 3-6, freshman Saby Nihalani stormed back to win the second set 6-1 and the tiebreak in place of the third set 10-5, as the Deacs took a 6-0 lead.
Davis highlighted the match with a huge come-from-behind victory in the top spot. Clemson's Marie Leduc took the first set 7-6 (7), but Davis rallied back to take set two 7-6 (2) forcing a third set tie break. Davis completed the comeback with a 10-6 tie break win in place of the final frame to give the Deacs their fifth sweep of the season.
Up next, the Deacons will travel to Montgomery, Ala., for the annual Blue Gray Classic, Feb. 22-23. Draws and match times will be announced at a later time.
