GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior women's tennis player Emma Davis has been named ACC Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. Davis splits the honor with Georgia Tech's Valeriya Deminova.
Davis helped lead the Deacons to a pair of wins over the weekend, with a 6-1 victory over Winthrop and a 7-0 sweep of Clemson in the ACC opener. The Cohasset, Mass., native got off to a strong start with a 6-2 win in doubles with partner Chandler Carter over the 20th-ranked Winthrop duo Lauren Proctor and Megan Kauffman. Davis followed with a straight set singles win over No. 32 Proctor, 6-2, 6-4.
After falling in a first set tiebreak in singles action against Clemson, Davis rallied back to complete the 7-0 sweep for the Deacons. Clemson's Marie Leduc took a 1-0 advantage with a 7-6 (7) opening set victory. Davis evened the match at 1-1, topping Leduc 7-6 (2) in the second frame. Davis capped the match, defeating Leduc 10-6 in a third set tiebreak as Wake Forest earned its first shutout victory over the Tigers since 2001.
Wake Forest returns to action at the Blue Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala., on Feb. 22-23.
