Deacons Outlast Illinois, Fall to Oklahoma State in Championship Match

MONTGOMERY, ALA. – Wake Forest women's tennis advanced to the championship of the Blue Gray Classic on Saturday, topping No. 2 seed Illinois, 4-3. The Deacons fell to No. 1 seed Oklahoma State in the final on Saturday afternoon.
The Deacons picked up the doubles point over the Illini on Friday afternoon and kept the momentum rolling on Saturday to get the victory in the first match of the day. 45th -ranked Emma Davis and Chandler Carter glided to a 6-0 victory on court one over No. 60 duo Dani Pedraza Novak and Sasha Belaya. No. 47 Anna Brylin and Anna Ulyashchenko sealed the point, defeating Asuka Kawai and Mia Rabinowitz 6-3.
The Fighting Illini rallied back to win three singles matches on courts one, two and five, but Wake persevered to edge out Illinois. Eliza Omirou earned a two-set win, 6-0 6-1 win for Wake's first singles point of the morning. Freshman Peyton Pesavento tied the match at 3-3 with a hard-fought 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) win on court six against Novak.
After dropping the first set, 4-6, Anna Brylin battled back to win set two 6-1, putting the outcome of the match into the third set on court four. The Wake freshman broke at deuce for the 7-5 victory, leading the Deacons to the championship match where they would face Oklahoma State later in the day.
In the final match of the tournament, the Cowboys took an early 1-0 lead with the doubles point. Oklahoma State earned the victory on court one, but Brylin and Ulyashchenko evened it up with a 6-4 decision on court three. Omirou and MC Meredith battled but came up just short on court two, 7-5.
The Cowboys swept the singles points coming out on top on courts two, five and six, before the Deacons could get on the board.
Wake Forest returns to action on Friday, March 1 against Boston College at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
