No. 20 Wake Forest Splits Doubleheader

2/25/2019 12:50:00 AM | Baseball

The Demon Deacons defeated Quinnipiac, 15-5, in the opener before falling to Elon, 6-3

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 20 Wake Forest split a day-night doubleheader, cruising past Quinnipiac, 15-5, before falling to Elon, 6-3, at David F. Couch Ballpark on Sunday.

The Demon Deacons (3-4) started the day at noon and didn't wrap up until past midnight, with a neutral game occurring in between the two Wake Forest games.

Wake Forest travels to Elon on Monday at 5 p.m. to make up Friday's rained out contest.

Game 1: Wake Forest 15, Quinnipiac 5

Ryan Cusick made his first-career start and tossed a gem, while the Deacon bats came to life to the tune of 14 hits, 10 walks and four home runs.

Shane Muntz blasted two longballs as he finished the game with four RBIs to lead the offensive attack, while Cole McNamee drilled a grand slam and DJ Poteet reached base four times, including his first homer of the season.

Cusick struck out seven Bobcats (1-3) over 5.0 shutout frames, allowing five hits and a walk. Reese Robinson and Andrew Rust also had scoreless outings in relief.

Patrick Frick and Bobby Seymour added two hits apiece to aid the Deacon offense.

Wake Forest scored five times in the first inning and five more in the second to take command of the game, cruising to a 15-0 lead through six innings en route to the win.

Game 2: Elon 6, Wake Forest 3

The Deacs came out on the short end of a highly-anticipated pitching duel.

Wake Forest chased preseason All-American Kyle Brnovich from the game in the fifth inning, but could only manage one run off the bullpen over the final 4.1 innings.

The Deacs opened the scoring in the third with back-to-back doubles from DJ Poteet and Jake Mueller. Mueller then scored on an RBI groundout to put the Deacs ahead, 2-0.

Colin Peluse, who retired the first eight hitters he faced, ran into trouble in the fourth. The Phoenix (5-1) recorded four hits in the inning, including two for extra bases, to pull in front, 3-2.

Elon added three more runs in the sixth, including a Cam Devanney solo homer, to push its lead to 6-2.

The big hit evaded the Deacs in the closing innings, as Wake Forest stranded seven baserunners over the last four times at bat, including leaving the bases loaded in the eighth.

Brnovich allowed two runs on three hits and four walks over 4.2 innings with five strikeouts, while Dean McCarthy earned the win in relief.

Brandon Justice kept the Deacs off the board for 2.1 innings, while Ty Adcock tossed the final 1.1 innings to earn the save.

For Wake Forest, Antonio Menendez was once again stellar in relief as he conceded just a walk over 2.0 shutout frames with four strikeouts, while Tyler Witt struck out the side in order in the ninth.
