Deacs Display Balanced Effort on Final Day in Iowa

AMES, IOWA – Wake Forest track and field impressed on day two of the Iowa State Classic, wrapping up the meet against national competition. Among the opponents were the University of Florida, LSU, BYU, Purdue, Alabama, North Carolina, Iowa State and Minnesota. The Demon Deacons amassed three heat victories, six top-five and three top-10 finishes on the final day. Nine members of the Deacs' squad set new personal record marks in their respective events.
 
On the track, Robert Heppenstall set a season-best time in the men's 800m (1:48.33). The current indoor 800m school record holder came on strong during the final stretch for the second-place finish. Johanna Shulz, Ethan Roach and Zach Facioni won their heats, setting the tone for Wake Forest. Schulz won heat three of the women's mile at 4:47.53, good for seventh overall. Roach took the crown in heat two of the men's 60m first round at 6.95, following that up with a personal-best performance in the final at 6.92. Facioni continued to build strength as the season progresses, winning his heat in the men's mile with a personal-best time of 4:04.71. Cydney Delley impressed in the women's 400m. She earned a top-five finish (4) with a mark of 55.94, also a personal-best.

In the field, Janese Lynch (2) and Alva Hicks (5) finished in the top-five of the women's shot put. Lynch reached a personal-best mark of 14.73m. Teammate Chanel Dawson rounded out the top-10 with a best mark of 12.33m. Tesia Kempski hung in contention for the women's pole vault title, finishing second behind Minnesota and Illinois.

Up next, the Demon Deacons will be back at the JDL FastTrack on February 15-16 for the JDL DMR Invitational in Winston-Salem.
