The Demon Deacons visit Charlotte for the first of two meets in the queen city
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field team kicks off the outdoor season tomorrow (March 15), competing in the 49er Classic at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center on the campus of UNC Charlotte. It's a full slate for the Deacs with 29 student-athletes competing on the track (14 men, 15 women) and eight in the field (three men, five women).
The outdoor classic will operate as an "open meet", allowing some non-collegiate clubs to participate. Including an estimated 54 schools, there will be roughly 1,750 individual participants in Charlotte. A few notable entries among the group are Davidson College, Appalachian State, Charlotte, East Carolina, Howard, Western Carolina, Gardner-Webb, East Tennessee State, University of Tampa and UNC-Greensboro.
The three-day meet marks the first of two visits to Charlotte for the Demon Deacons. They will head back to Charlotte Apr. 12-13 for the Charlotte Invitational.
Returning junior, Elijah Shalaway, will make his first appearance of the season coming off a strong 2018 campaign for the Deacs. Shalaway earned second team All-ACC honors and set the third-best outdoor javelin throw in program history with a mark of 66.41m/217-10.
On the women's side, Rachel Kern looks to repeat her 2018 season, in which she earned first team All-ACC honors in the javelin. Her outdoor mark of 45.21m/148-4 also sits third in program history. Tesia Kempski (3) will be joined by Darby Deutsch (6) and Haidyn Turner (9) in the women's pole vault. All three sit in the Wake Forest all-time outdoor top-10 heading into the 2019 season.
After this weekend, the Demon Deacons head to nearby High Point University to compete in the prestigious High Point Vertklasse meet. The Deacs follow that up with a trio of coast-to-coast meets spanning from March 27-30. Wake Forest will have student-athletes competing at the Raleigh, Texas and Stanford relays.
