Boston College Tops Wake Forest To Open Series

The Eagles scored five-straight runs in the middle innings, enough to win, 5-3.
"They out-toughed us," head coach Tom Walter said. "Situational at-bats, runners on third base, we didn't execute. We didn't have enough tough at bats. Our defense let us down, which helped them score four of their five runs. We've got some soul-searching to do, we're not a very good baseball team right now."
The Demon Deacons (10-9, 1-3 ACC) out-hit the Eagles (10-6, 2-2 ACC), 11-7, but Wake Forest went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position, as well as 0-for-4 with the bases loaded, to leave 11 runners on base. The Deacs also committed three errors, leading to a pair of unearned runs for Boston College.
Brendan Tinsman led the way offensively with a 3-for-4 effort, including an RBI single in the second inning to score Shane Muntz, who started the inning with a triple. The Deacs then loaded the bases after that, but a lineout and strikeout stranded the other three baserunners.
The Eagles struck for three runs in the fourth, fueled in part by an infield single and another single which was followed by a throwing error, as BC took a 3-1 lead.
Jack Cunningham hit a solo homer to make the score 4-1 in the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Deacs loaded the bases with one out once again, chasing Boston College starter Dan Metzdorf from the game. Reliever Thomas Lane entered and tallied a strikeout and flyout as the Deacs left the bases loaded for the second time.
BC tacked on a run in the seventh when a leadoff throwing error came around to score on a sacrifice fly in the seventh to make the score 5-1.
Wake Forest cut its deficit in half in the eighth. Tinsman and Michael Ludowig recorded back-to-back one-out singles, followed by a Bruce Steel RBI double and DJ Poteet sac fly.
But the Deacs left the potential tying run at the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings as the Eagles closed out the win.
Deacon starter Colin Peluse allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks in 6.1 innings, striking out four. Antonio Menendez struck out three over 2.2 shutout frames in relief.
For Boston College, Metzdorf conceded one run on seven hits and four walks over 5.1 frames, striking out six, to earn the win.
Ludowig (2-for-3, walk) and Steel (2-for-3, double, walk) recorded multi-hit efforts for the Deacs.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
