LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic – The Wake Forest women's golf team capped a dominant performance at the Tar Heel Classic at Casa de Campo with a record-breaking final round on Saturday. The Demon Deacons shot 14-under during the third round at the prestigious Teeth of the Dog course to finish the event at 23-under and post a 19-shot victory, the first win of the Kim Lewellen era.
The No. 12 Demon Deacons were one of just two teams to finish the tournament under par, as No. 16 Virginia was the runner-up at 4-under.
Wake Forest set a pair of school records on Saturday en route to the victory. The 14-under final round was the best single round in program history, topping the 9-under final round at the 2004 ACC Championship. The 23-under par three-round total shattered the previous 54-hole scoring record of 13-under set at the 2016 Cougar Classic.
"Throughout the year, this team has shown a lot of talent," said Lewellen. "At this tournament they all came together and made Wake Forest history."
Senior Jennifer Kupcho captured her eighth collegiate victory, shooting a final round 67 to finish the event at 14-under. Her 54-hole total was one shot off the school-record 15-under she has shot twice before. It marked the ninth tournament a Deacon has finished 10-under par or better with Kupcho having five of those nine performances, including the four best 54-hole scores in Wake Forest history.
Kupcho's eight career victories are two shy of the school record of 10 set by Stephanie Neill (1992-95).
