WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field team will be in full force this weekend as they prepare for day one of the Raleigh Relays. Events begin Friday morning at the Paul Derr Track and Field Complex on the campus of N.C. State University.
The meet begins for the Demon Deacons Friday at 9:00 a.m. with section one of the women's 5000m. Competition runs through 11 p.m. on Friday before starting back up at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The Deacs will send 40 student-athletes (20 men and 20 women) to Raleigh to square off against national competition.
Tesia Kempski, ranked third in the ACC, looks to carry her momentum from High Point into the Paul Derr Track and Field Complex, where she took first place in the pole vault in 2018. On the men's side, Kane Aldrich is set for his first appearance at the annual Raleigh Relays. Aldrich, coming off a strong inaugural indoor campaign, currently sits second in the conference with an outdoor-best height of 4.61m. Elijah Shalaway seeks a victory in the men's javelin following a second-place finish last season in Raleigh.
On the track, Freshman Zach Facioni will make his outdoor debut, running in the men's 5000m. Facioni is coming off a second team All-ACC selection at the ACC Indoor Championships, as well as a stellar first cross country campaign. Joining him will be senior Craig Corti and junior Alex Turner.
On the women's side, Mimi Smith will run in the 10k. She's coming off a win in the 1500m at the High Point Vertklasse. Her time of 4:32.22 was enough to earn the title and a new outdoor personal best in the event.
ACC Network Extra will stream two segments of the competition, running from 7 p.m. on Friday and 1:20 p.m. on Saturday. It is "To Be Determined" when the broadcasts will end.
Nearly 100 schools will be represented in this year's Raleigh Relays, including fellow ACC schools Boston College, Duke, Florida State, Louisville, NC State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
The Deacon men will see competition from three teams in the top 25 in Florida, Georgia and Florida State, while the women will face top 25 teams in Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Notre Dame.
After this weekend, the Demon Deacons return to the Queen City for the Charlotte Invitational, April 12-13.
