The Demon Deacons scored four runs in the final two innings but were unable to complete the comeback
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A late-inning rally by the Wake Forest baseball team came up just short against the 10th-ranked Louisville Cardinals on Sunday (March 31), as the Demon Deacons dropped a 5-4 decision at Patterson Stadium.
The starting pitching for the Cardinals (22-6, 9-3 ACC) halted the Wake Forest (15-14, 5-7 ACC) attack for much of the game, with Louisville's Bobby Miller pitching a no-hitter through seven innings.
Wake Forest got into Louisville's bullpen in the eighth, prompting a late-inning rally from the visitors. Jake Mueller and DJ Poteet led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After Patrick Frick reached on a fielder's choice, Bruce Steel roped a double to left, driving in Mueller. Chris Lanzilli tacked on another two-out hit with an infield single to bring home Steel.
The Deacs continued to threaten in the ninth as Bobby Seymour opened the top of the ninth with a single to right. Brendon Tinsman cut Louisville's lead to just one as he smacked a two-run home run, his fifth home run of the season, the very next batter. Wake Forest was unable to continue the pressure, with Louisville retiring the next three batters to close out the game.
William Fleming pitched the final two innings for the Deacons in relief, striking out one while retiring the side in order each inning.
Wake Forest is back in action on Tuesday, April 2 at Appalachian State. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
