Wake Drops Heartbreaker to No. 4 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - In a game that featured 16 ties and 11 lead changes, No. 4 Duke came out on top 71-70 on Tuesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Chaundee Brown recorded another 20-point ACC road game and his second career double-double finishing with a team-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Childress added 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half, five rebounds and three assists. Ikenna Smart pulled down five rebounds in the first eight minutes and finished the game with a season-high 10 boards.
The teams were evenly matched in the first half, as Duke shot 43 percent from the floor and Wake posted a 40 percent clip. The Blue Devils took a slight advantage on the boards 20-18, while both sides recorded five assists. Wake forced nine turnovers in the first half and outscored the Blue Devils 10-2 off turnovers, but Duke took a one-point, 35-34 lead into halftime after hitting a pair of free throws with under 10 seconds remaining in the frame.
Wake Forest (11-18, 4-13 ACC) led 5-2 to start the game and Duke (26-4, 14-3 ACC) pulled within one, but Hoard hit a three at the 16-minute mark to give Wake an 8-4 lead. The Blue Devils once again pulled within one, but Brown connected on another three for the Deacs to push the lead back to four. Back-to-back triples from the Blue Devils tied the game and then gave Duke the three-point advantage. Mucius quickly responded with a three of his own to tie the contest 26-26 with just over seven minutes to go in the half.
Both sides continued to trade baskets and leads until two Duke free throws handed Duke the one point advantage at the half.
Out of the break, Childress silenced the Cameron Crazies with 10 points in the first three minutes and Sharone Wright, Jr. connected on another deep ball to put the Deacs up by 10, their largest lead of the game. Duke went on a 14-2 run to regain the 53-51 lead with 11:16 to play. Childress hit his third three of the game, once again switching the lead in favor of Wake.
The Blue Devils hit a three on the other side to take a 65-62 lead with just over three minutes remaining. A 7-0 run for Duke pushed the Blue Devils' back up by five, but a jumper from Childress cut the lead to three under the two-minute mark.
Down the stretch, Brown was clutch for the Demon Deacons hitting a pair of free throws and drawing a charge on the other end, giving the Deacs possession, down by three with one minute to play. Brown continued to fight for Wake Forest, hitting two more from the charity stripe to bring the Deacons within one.
Duke hit another shot on the opposite end, but Childress responded setting up a one-point game with just seconds remaining. A miscue from Duke gave Wake Forest possession with seven seconds on the clock, but the Deacs' shot fell just short as fourth-ranked Duke came out on top by one.
Wake Forest will return home for Senior Night and its final regular season game on Saturday (March 12) at noon against Florida State.
