Lynch nears school record in women's shot put
CHARLOTTE, N.C - Wake Forest track and field closed out competition at the Charlotte Invitational on Saturday night in Charlotte, N.C. The Deacs captured five event titles (four individual in the field) at the two-day meet. Sophomore Janese Lynch, along with teammates Rachel Kern, Alexandria Florent and Tesia Kempski dominated their opponents to earn titles for the Deacs.
DAY ONE | Highlighted by Kern's victory in the women's javelin, Wake Forest came out swinging on day one in the Queen City. Teammates Alva Hicks (hammer) and Elijah Shalaway (men's javelin) earned second-place finishes in their respective events to show strength in multiple areas for the Demon Deacons.
On the track, Sam Halvorsen made her highly anticipated 2019 outdoor debut, coming through with a fifth-place finish in the women's 1500m with a time of 4:25.58. She was joined by 2019 first team indoor All ACC selection, Johanna Schulz, who finished seventh at 4:26.91. Hannah Brookover was close behind in eighth at 4:27.69 and Kaitlin Derry set a personal-best with a time of 4:34.57. Halvorsen's time of 4:25.58 is good for seventh-best in the ACC following the meet.
For the men, freshman Michael Moerk finished second in his heat with a personal-best time of 3:56.37 in the men's 1500m. Fellow newcomer, Brent Bailey finished fourth overall in the event with a career-best of 3:50.45. Meanwhile, Dakota Greenwalt continued his consistent pace with a second-place finish in the 800m, crossing the line at 1:50.93. Archie Wallis was close behind in third at 1:51.23.
DAY TWO | The Demon Deacons didn't let a 90-minute weather delay slow them down or erase their momentum heading into the final day. With three individual titles and a women's 4x400m relay victory, Wake Forest was anything but sluggish up against the opposing competition.
Lynch, a promising sophomore talent, continued to show tremendous desire to get better every week. She battled in the women's shot put, hanging on for the win and destroying her previous best in the event with a final mark of 15.80m. Her finishing distance is good for fourth in the ACC and her second career outdoor title (both in shot put). Seniors Florent (high jump) and Kempski (pole vault) didn't disappoint in their respective events. Both displayed why they're among the top in the conference, making sure they did exactly what was needed to win. Sophomore Kern ranked eighth in the ACC in the javelin coming into the Charlotte Invitational and proved that she's quite comfortable in the Queen City, having won the event a few weeks prior at the 49er Classic.
Closing out the meet, the women's 4x400m relay squad rolled to victory, solidifying the momentum held by the Deacs as we inch closer toward the conference championships.
Up next, Wake Forest heads to Charlottesville, Va to compete in the annual Virginia Challenge. Events will take place at Lannigan field, April 19-20.
