Jones Paces Deacs at Virginia Challenge
4/21/2019 12:11:00 AM | Track and Field
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Wake Forest track and field closed out the Virginia Challenge late Saturday night at Lannigan Field in Charlottesville, Va. The two-day meet was affected by severe weather on Friday, ultimately postponing events on day one. The action was jam-packed on day two and the Deacs strung together solid performances across the board.
Freshman Tony Jones entered the winner's circle once again in his inaugural outdoor season with the Demon Deacons. With his second win this season, Jones displayed why he remains in the discussion among the top-40 jumpers in the eastern region.
Including Jones' title, the Deacs collected 14 top-10 finishes throughout the meet.
DAY ONE | Despite the shortened day of competition due to severe weather, Rachel Kern and freshman Lily Harding-Delooze earned top-five finishes in their respective events to kick things off for the Deacs. Kern, competing in the women's javelin, finished fourth with a new career-high of 46.69m. Harding-Delooze ran in the women's 800m and sneaked into the top-five with a fifth-place finish. Her time was fourth among ACC competitors.
Alva Hicks was able to complete the hammer throw event just before the weather delay went into effect. Her mark of 55.70m was good for an eighth-place finish.
DAY TWO | Forced to adjust to a schedule shift, the Demon Deacons were in the middle of a packed event lineup on the final day of competition. The day belonged to Jones. The Pennsylvania native shined once again in the men's high jump. His cleared height of 2.03m gave him his second title in his last three appearances.
As primetime neared, the anticipation grew and 2018 second team All-American selection (outdoor 10k), Sam Halvorsen, was ready to partake in the women's 5k invite. Along with teammate and senior Mimi Smith, the two were in good position to make noise at the 2019 edition of the Virginia Challenge.
Halvorsen snagged a fifth-place finish with a new personal-best of 16:06.17. Her finish on Saturday was just over 14 seconds better than her time at the 2018 Virginia Challenge in the 5k where she crossed the line in 10th-place. Her new career-best is good for the fourth fastest outdoor mark in Wake Forest history.
Also on the track, Elise Wright continued to impress in the women's 3k steeplechase. The freshman's time of 10:25.03 is the third-best mark in Wake Forest history right behind teammate Hannah Brookover. Wright won her heat at the Virginia Challenge and finished eighth-overall (fourth among ACC competitors).
