Pitching Steps Up in 6-2 Win Over Liberty

Wake Forest didn't allow a hit over the final five innings and conceded just one earned run.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest pitchers didn't concede a hit over the final five innings, stifling Liberty's offense in a 6-2 win at David F. Couch Ballpark on Tuesday night.
The Flames (27-9) tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning, but the Demon Deacons (22-16) held Liberty hitless and scoreless the rest of the way while the offense plated four more runs to pull in front for good.
"We pitched well today," head coach Tom Walter said. "I was really pleased with the way we pitched the ball really up and down. We got a little unlucky with a couple infield hits that cost us a run and a defensive play we should make that cost us another run. We could have very easily shut out a good team today."
Antonio Menendez earned his second victory of the last three games to improve to 5-1. He struck out three over 2.2 innings, conceding one hit and no walks. Shane Muntz retired one batter, then Bobby Hearn tossed 1.1 hitless frames with three strikeouts and William Fleming closed the game with 1.1 perfect innings.
Muntz also broke the 2-2 tie with a solo homer in the fifth inning to put the Deacs ahead for good. Brendan Tinsman (3-for-3, three RBIs) added a solo homer in the sixth to double Wake Forest's lead to 4-2. Michael Ludowig and Tinsman both knocked in runs in the seventh to cap the scoring.
Tyler Witt started for Wake Forest and allowed two runs (one earned) over 3.1 innings.
"They're all important [games] for us now," Walter added. "We let some get away from us early in the year so now we've got to win these games, and we got it done tonight."
Tinsman gave the Deacs an early lead with a second-inning RBI single. Liberty tied it the next half inning when a run came around to score thanks to an error and then an infield single.
Bruce Steel doubled and scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the third, but Liberty again answered with an RBI fielder's choice in the fourth, but the pitching staff didn't allow another hit after that.
Bobby Seymour went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs, while Muntz and Ludowig also reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
Wake Forest is back at home later this week, taking on No. 8 NC State in a three-game ACC series from Thursday-Saturday.
