After dropping the first game of the doubleheader 4-3, and falling behind 7-0 in the nightcap, Wake Forest rallied back to win the rubber game, 9-8.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- After dropping the first game of the doubleheader 4-3, and falling behind 7-0 in the nightcap, Wake Forest stormed back to knock off No. 8 NC State in the rubber game, 9-8, at David F. Couch Ballpark on Saturday.
The Demon Deacons (24-17, 11-10 ACC) surrendered two runs in the first and five in the second to give the Wolfpack (31-10, 13-8 ACC) a 7-0 lead through two innings before rallying from behind to clinch a series victory.
Wake Forest scored three runs in the third, fifth, and seventh innings to take its first lead of the doubleheader, and William Fleming faced the minimum to earn a six-out save.
The Deacs hit the road for six-straight games, beginning with a trip to Charlotte on Tuesday night.
Game 1: NC State 4, Wake Forest 3
Wake Forest rallied back from its first early deficit of the day, tying the game at 3-3 with a three-run sixth inning, but J.T. Jarrett hit a solo homer in the seventh which proved to be the difference.
Tyler McDonough had his first of six hits over the doubleheader in the first inning with an RBI single. He added another RBI in the third, then scored on a wild pitch to give the Wolfpack a 3-0 lead.
After the Deacs only tallied one hit over the first five innings against NC State starter Reid Johnston, Wake Forest tagged him for three runs on four hits in the sixth inning alone. Bobby Seymour delivered the big blow with a two-run double, while Michael Ludowig followed with a sacrifice fly which knotted the score at 3-3.
But Jarrett hit the first pitch of the seventh inning just over the wall in left field to put NC State right back in front. Wolfpack reliever Nick Swiney held the Deacs to just one hit over the final 3.1 innings, striking out six without allowing a walk to earn the win.
Jared Shuster took the tough luck loss in relief. Over 4.0 innings, he allowed one run on three hits and three walks, striking out four. Bobby Hearn (1.1 IP), Antonio Menendez (1.1 IP) and Carter Bach (0.1 IP) followed with scoreless efforts to keep the deficit at one run.
Seymour finished the game 2-for-4 to lead the Deacon offense.
Game 2: Wake Forest 9, NC State 8
The Wolfpack appeared to ride the game one momentum into the nightcap with seven runs the first two innings, but it was the Deacons who surged back to earn the series-clinching win.
Michael Turconi reached base all five of his plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a homer and two walks. Shane Muntz and Bobby Seymour each homered, while Patrick Frick and Chris Lanzilli had two hits apiece.
For NC State, Tyler McDonough was a single away from the cycle as he finished the game 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, a homer and five RBIs, and Evan Edwards added four hits for the Wolfpack.
McDonough's two-run homer put the Wolfpack on the board in the opening inning, then two Wake Forest errors helped NC State score five unearned runs in the second inning.
Deacon starter Ryan Cusick settled in after that, putting up three straight scoreless innings as Wake Forest chipped into the deficit. Over his 5.0 frames, he allowed seven runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
In the third inning, Turconi hit a solo blast off the video board and Bobby Seymour roped a two-run homer to cut the margin to 7-3.
Seymour hit an RBI groundout in the fifth, followed by a Muntz opposite-field dinger to trim NC State's lead to 7-6.
McDonough hit an RBI double for NC State to extend the margin back to 8-6 in the top of the seventh before the Deacs stormed ahead in the bottom of the inning.
Turconi singled, Frick reached on an error and Lanzilli hit an RBI single to make the score 8-7. Following a Muntz single, Ludowig and Christian Long were both hit by pitches with the bases loaded to bring home the tying and go-ahead runs.
Tyler Witt pitched the sixth and seventh innings and allowed a run on two hits with two strikeouts to earn the win.
William Fleming entered in the eighth and tossed a 1-2-3 inning. He retired the first batter of the ninth inning before Edwards singled, but Fleming responded by forcing a game-ending 3-6 double play.
"After the five unearned in the second, Cusick went out there and put up three zeroes, which was huge," head coach Tom Walter said. "Ty Witt got us six big outs in the middle, and Will Fleming did what he's done all year, he went in and made big pitches."
