Deacs Defeat Oklahoma, Punch Ticket to NCAA Quarterfinals

5/10/2019 8:12:00 PM | Men's Tennis

The Demon Deacons will be playing in the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The third-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team punched its ticket to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-1 victory over No. 21 Oklahoma Friday (May 10) afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.

It is the third consecutive quarterfinal appearance for the Demon Deacons (32-3), who set a new school record for wins in a season with the result. After bowing out in the quarterfinals in 2017, Wake Forest defeated Illinois in the quarterfinals a year ago en route to the program's first-ever NCAA title.

The Deacs await the winner of fifth-ranked Virginia and 12th-ranked Stanford in the quarterfinal round, which will be played on Thursday, May 16 at the USTA National Campus.

Oklahoma (17-11) jumped out to the early 1-0 advantage thanks to a pair of 6-3 wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. It was the only lead of the day for the Sooners as Wake Forest dominated singles action to pick up four straight victories.

The Demon Deacons set the tone early by taking the opening set on five of the six singles courts. It was a freshman to get the Deacs on the board and even the score at 1-all, with Siddhant Banthia taken down Jochen Bertsch at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-2.

Petros Chrysochos gave the Deacs the lead for good, as the eighth-ranked senior defeated No. 41 Alex Bakshi at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3, in his final home match. Rrezart Cungu followed moments later with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at the No. 4 spot to put the Deacs a point from victory.

It was a race to see who would clinch, as Borna Gojo and Melios Efstathiou both leading 5-2 in their second sets at the No. 1 and 5 positions respectively. The freshman Efstathiou delivered, 6-4, 6-2, to secure Wake Forest's trip to the quarterfinals. Gojo had match point on his court when play was stopped.

Wake Forest's will learn its next opponent on Saturday (May 11) when Virginia and Stanford meet in Charlottesville. First serve in that match is set for 12 p.m.
