Homers Doom Wake Forest in Loss to No. 17 Miami

5/11/2019 7:42:00 PM | Baseball

The Hurricanes hit five out of the park, including three in the eighth inning, to defeat the Deacs.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- It looked like Senior Day was on its way to a happy ending with Wake Forest snagging a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning, but No. 17 Miami hit three of its five home runs in the eighth inning to earn an 8-4 win at David F. Couch Ballpark on Saturday evening.

Anthony Vilar went deep twice to lead the Hurricanes (36-15, 16-10 ACC), while Chad Crosbie added a three-run blast which extended Miami's lead from 5-4 to 8-4.

Logan Harvey led the Demon Deacons (28-22, 12-14 ACC) on his Senior Day with a 2-for-4 effort, including hitting the go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.

The Deacs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Michael Turconi led off the first inning with a triple and scored on a Patrick Frick RBI groundout.

Alex Toral homered for Miami to tie the game at 1-1 in the second inning, and Vilar hit his first longball in the fifth to put the Hurricanes up, 3-1.

In the sixth, the Deacs pulled in front with back-to-back doubles from Chris Lanzilli and Bobby Seymour. Seymour then scored on a wild pitch, and Harvey knocked in Bruce Steel with his double to put the Deacs up, 4-3.

In the eighth, Vilar and Adrian Del Castillo led off the inning with homers on back-to-back pitches to give the Hurricanes a 5-4 lead, then Crosbie capped off the inning with a two-out homer to put the game out of reach.

Wake Forest didn't get a hit the final three innings as Mark Mixon (3-1) earned the win, followed out by hitless frames from Daniel Federman and Gregory Veliz.

Jared Shuster started for Wake Forest and struck out seven over 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks. Antonio Menendez (1.2 IP), Carter Bach (0.1), Tyler Witt (0.2) and Ben Casstevens (0.1) threw hitless outings for the Deacs in relief.

Wake Forest honored its five graduating seniors before the game: Casstevens, Harvey, Witt, Bobby Hearn and Jake Mueller.

The series between Wake Forest and Miami wraps up on Monday night at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
