Wake Downs Austin Peay; Advances to Second Round of NCAA Championships
5/4/2019 1:04:00 PM | Women's Tennis
ATHENS, GA. - Austin Peay sought to be the first OVC school to win an NCAA Tournament match, but the 22nd-ranked Demon Deacons were too much for the Govs to handle. Wake Forest (21-8) handed Austin Peay (22-1) its first loss of the season with a 4-0 sweep on Saturday afternoon in the NCAA first round at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Wake's 21 wins this season are the most for the Deacons since the 2001-02 season.
"All of the credit in the world to Austin Peay," head coach Jeff Wyshner said. "We didn't know too much about them, but they have a really good team and there is a reason why they went 22-0 in the regular season and post season conference play."
Wake got off to a strong start, winning the early doubles point. The dominance began on the top court as No. 34 Emma Davis and Chandler Carter defeated the Govs 6-1. 79th-ranked Eliza Omirou and MC Meredith clinched the point with another 6-1 performance in the second spot.
On the singles courts, Omirou put the first singles point on the board, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 decision on court three. Carter gave Wake Forest a 3-0 advantage after downing Helena Kuppig 6-1, 6-2 in the fifth spot.
Davis dropped the first game, but won six straight to take the first set 6-1. Her opponent took an early lead again in the second frame and was one game away from evening the match, but Davis battled back from down 5-3 to win 7-5 to clinch the victory for the Deacons.
"I'm really proud of the way our players played. We stepped out in doubles and did a great job early in all three spots. Singles wise, Eliza (Omirou) and Chandler (Carter) did what we like to do and got two set quickies. Emma (Davis) was down 3-5 in the second set facing deuce point and stepped up like a senior captain should."
Up next, Wake Forest will take on the No. 1 overall seed Georgia on Sunday at 2 p.m., with a trip to the Super Regionals on the line.
