GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four members of the Wake Forest men's golf team were named to the 2019 All-ACC Academic Team on Wednesday (June 19). Senior Cameron Young and junior Eric Bae each were honored by the league for the third consecutive year, while redshirt freshman Kengo Aoshima and senior Lee Detmer were honored for the first time.
The four selections on the team are the most the Demon Deacons have had selected in the 13-year history of the honor. During the season they helped Wake Forest win five team titles, hold a top-five national ranking for most of the season and reach match play at the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history.
"I am proud that we had four players selected to the All-ACC Academic Team," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We had a great season on the course and this honor shows the hard work our players put into their schoolwork as well."
Young was an All-ACC selection after leading the Demon Deacons with a 70.56 stroke average, the fifth-best in program history. He had three victories during the spring, the most in a season by a Wake Forest golfer since 2003-04, winning at the General Hackler Championship, the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational and sharing medalist honors at the Stitch Intercollegiate. His 19-under performance to win in Augusta was the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history. He graduated this spring with a degree in Economics.
Bae also earned All-ACC honors this season after posting a 70.89 stroke average, the eighth-best in program history. He earned his first collegiate victory in October at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational and had three other top-five finishes, including being runner-up at the inaugural Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational where he shot a career-best 15-under.
Detmer was named to the team after a strong senior season for the Deacs where he had a career-best 71.80 stroke average. He concluded his collegiate career with his first top-five finish, posting a T-4th at the NCAA Championship, the best finish at the event by a Deac since 2006. He also had a top-10 finish at the ACC Championship. He graduated this spring with a degree in Economics.
Aoshima earned the honor during his first season on the course for the Deacs as he posted a stroke average of 70.65, the sixth-best in program history. He had five top-10 finishes this season in eight events, highlighted by a fourth-place finish at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate. Earlier this month he helped Team International to a victory at the 2019 Arnold Palmer Cup.
In addition to on-course success, to be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
