PINEHURST, N.C. – Two members of the Wake Forest men's golf team advanced to the round of 32 of the 2019 U.S. Amateur during Wednesday's play at the historic Pinehurst No. 2 course. Rising sophomore Alex Fitzpatrick and rising junior Parker Gillam each won their opening round of match play to advance to Thursday's second round.
Fitzpatrick is the No. 24 seed in match play after shooting 2-over during the 36-hole stroke play portion of the tournament. He defeated James Sugrue of Ireland, the 2019 British Amateur Champion, 5&4 in his round of 64 match. He will play Jack Trent of Australia in the round of 32 on Tuesday.
"I think I hit three or four 2-irons today just to make sure I kept putting the pressure on him to make it in the fairway," said Fitzpatrick. "That actually forced him to pull out driver. If you miss the fairway it's almost bogey automatically. When I got to 3-up, I kept hitting the 2-iron and just kept putting pressure on him."
It is the second time Fitzpatrick has advanced to match play at the U.S. Amateur. Last year he advanced to the quarterfinals in his debut appearance. In 2013, he carried the bag for his brother, Matthew, when he won the U.S. Amateur.
Gillam, making his first appearance at the U.S. Amateur, is the No. 59 seed in match play after shooting 4-over in stroke play. In his first round match, he posted a 4&3 win over No. 6 seed Philip Barbaree, a former U.S. Junior Amateur Champion. Gillam will play Brad Dalke of Oklahoma in the round of 32.
Recent graduate Cameron Young advanced to match play for the fifth time in his career as the No. 58 seed after shooting 4-over in stroke play, but fell in the first round to Jacob Solomon, 4&3. Rising redshirt senior Kyle Sterbinsky also competed in this year's U.S. Amateur, but didn't make the cut for match play.
The U.S. Amateur continues Thursday and runs through Sunday at Pinehurst. Thursday's schedule is set for the round of 32 in the morning and the round of 16 in the afternoon.
