Happy Move-In Day Demon Deacon Nation!
Welcome to Wake Forest is the theme for the day as campus is packed with First Year Families moving their new Demon Deacon students into the residence halls! With our three kids starting new schools this week (including one college freshman), Mary Lawrence and I are experiencing the same range of emotions as our new Wake Forest families!
There are so many loyal and hard working people behind the scenes supporting students in our schools and colleges. Last Wednesday morning, I had the honor of visiting with our Wake Forest facilities, grounds and maintenance staff members who do an amazing job of keeping the Reynolda Campus safe and beautiful. We appreciate each and every one of you!
The fall semester has not yet begun, and we have already chalked up some great moments for Wake Forest sports fans with big national and international golf performances, great tennis at the Winston-Salem Open featuring Deacon netters past, present and future, and a thrilling comeback rally win for our No. 23 ranked women's soccer team over the Florida Gators in an exhibition match Saturday night. Join me tomorrow night in Spry Stadium as Coach da Luz's squad kicks off Demon Deacon regular season competition against Temple at 7 p.m.!
We have a gold medalist! Congratulations to rising junior golfer Emilia Migliaccio who represented the United States, Wake Forest and her hometown of Cary to win two Pan American Games gold medals — winning the women's individual title by four shots and teaming with three other Americans to win the mixed team title. Click here to read what this victory meant to Emilia. Closer to home in Pinehurst, current Demon Deacon golfers Parker Gillam and Alex Fitzpatrick and recent graduate Cameron Young made it to the match play portion of the US Amateur.
We are now nine days and counting down until Opening Night at BB&T Field and Wake Forest Football! As Coach Clawson and the team continue their preparations, the Wake Forest athletics staff has been working hard towards our goal of offering the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina — we are spotlighting new enhancements regularly so pay close attention to GoDeacs.com, @demondeacons on Twitter and Instagram, and @WakeForestSports on Facebook.
So here we go as...
History Will be Made as The Red Sea of Sound Joins The Spirit of the Old Gold & Black on Opening Night!
For the first time ever, Winston-Salem State University's Red Sea of Sound Marching Band will join with The Spirit of the Old Gold and Black for a joint halftime performance! Kudos to Dr. Tim Heath, the brand new Director of Athletic Bands at Wake Forest and WSSU's Dr. Michael Magruder for initiating this collaborative partnership! WSSU's Chancellor Elwood Robinson and President Hatch are close friends who have long worked together to better serve Winston-Salem and we are excited to welcome all our friends and neighbors to Opening Night.
Gameday Music Begins with Big Daddy Love Band in the new "I'm a Fan Zone"
With community grassroots efforts bolstering Opening Night ticket sales, we know we'll have lots of fans attending their first Wake Forest game. Adding to our legendary tailgating tradition, earlier this week we introduced the new pregame I'm A Fan Zone that is free to all and located in front of McCreary Tower, by the Deacon statue. There is something for everyone, including live music, the Lowes Foods Beer Den, food trucks and fun activities for kids. Our partners at Gears and Guitars, Winston-Salem's annual spring live music festival, are helping us build a great lineup of live bands for the I'm a Fan Zone, starting off with Big Daddy Love Band. The music (and the Zone!) cranks up three hours before kick-off! Click here for all the details.
Fan Safety Enhancements Coming to BB&T Field and LJVM Coliseum
As Dr. Seuss said via "The Cat in the Hat" — "It's fun to have fun, but you have to know how!" Safety is the foundation of fun at Wake Forest events, and last week we announced the addition of metal detector wanding as part of our entry procedures at BB&T Field and LJVM Coliseum for the 2019-20 season. Please allow some extra time to enter the stadium to be sure you can be in your seats for kick-off. For enhanced fan comfort you will also find additional cooling misting stations and water bottle refilling locations throughout the concourses. Click here to read more about our safety enhancements coming this fall.
Football Ambassador Program
A great way to introduce new fans to the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina, show appreciation to employees, coworkers or neighbors and support the Demon Deacons is the new Football Ambassador Program. Football Ambassadors will have the opportunity to purchase tickets in bulk to any home football game this season and are encouraged to bring individuals, groups or community members who might not otherwise experience the hospitality and excitement of Wake Forest football at BB&T Field. Click here for more information.
Big Four Race Kicks off as 'Heels come to town September 13
Sports fans across the nation will be watching when the Tar Heels come west on I-40 on Friday, September 13 as we host the first Big Four match-up at BB&T Field. The oldest rivalry in the state began when Wake Forest and the Tar Heels squared off in 1888! This year marks the first time since 1921 that we have hosted UNC, Duke and NC State at home, all in the same year! Get your tickets today and join a packed house to cheer on Coach Clawson and the team in front of a national ESPN audience. With a 6 p.m. kickoff, make your plans to join us in the I'm A Fan Zone beginning at 3 p.m. and let me know if you need a letter to get you out of the office early!
Momentum Building for ACC Network Launch as Charter/Spectrum signs on!
Kudos to Commissioner Swofford, the ACC and Charter/Spectrum for completing a big deal for Wake Forest fans and student-athletes alike! Tomorrow brings the historic launch of the ACC Network, and thanks in part to the action of our fans, more and more carriers are signing up each week. With so many options on board for ACC fans including Hulu, YouTube TV and DirectTV, carriers know they risk losing subscribers if they don't offer ACCN. If you are one of our many alumni, parents and friends in areas like Washington D.C., Atlanta, Boston and New York, it is now "go-time" to put pressure on Comcast to carry ACCN! Hit them up via Twitter @comcastcares or contact their customer support team and demand ACCN! Remember that www.GetACCN.com is the easy source for ACCN info.
ACCN's launch includes a heavy dose of exclusive Demon Deacon broadcasts, such as women's soccer's match with Santa Clara on August 28 at 5 p.m., the Opening Night football game against Utah State on August 30, and No. 4 men's soccer vs. Creighton on Sunday, September 1 at 7 p.m.
