Wake Forest Tops Presbyterian 3-0 in Season Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest volleyball opened the 2019 season with a 3-0 sweep over Presbyterian College in the first game of the Spartan Demon Deacon Classic.
"We talked about having good energy top to bottom throughout the entire match," interim head coach Randi Smart said. "We didn't want to know what the score was based on body language. They did a great job being aggressive and serving aggressive. We had a ton of touches and four team blocks.We got a couple of freshmen going to get some experience in their first collegiate match and I really liked their focus."
Freshman Peyton Suess had a strong showing in her first match in a Deacon uniform with a double-double of 14 kills and 17 digs, both team-highs. Caitlyn Della posted 13 kills and a team-best .600 attack percentage, while Madeline Holt led the way with 39 assists.
The Deacs gained early momentum hitting .481 in the first set, while holding the Blue Hose to a .030 clip. Suess collected five early kills and Paige Sebesta added four. Wake was strong at the net with three blocks early, led by Suess and Della.
Della continued to provide powerful offense hitting .800 in the second stanza with a team-high eight kills.
Presbyterian rallied back in the final set, taking a 10-6 lead, but a 7-1 run for the Deacons put Wake back on top. Junior Jaclyn Childress sealed the 25-23 third set victory with a kill to give Wake the 3-0 sweep.
The Deacons return to action on Saturday to host NC Central at 11 a.m., and close the tournament at UNCG at 7:30 p.m.
