Women’s Tennis Opens Fall Season at Georgia/Puerto Rico Invitational

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO- Wake Forest women's tennis made its 2019 debut at the Georgia/Puerto Rico Invitational over the weekend. Wake joined host team Georgia, Vanderbilt, and Clemson at the event.
Wake returns seven players from last year's NCAA tournament squad and welcomes three newcomers, freshmen Anna Campana and Maddie Lynch and Vanderbilt transfer, sophomore Carolyn Campana.
Friday featured a doubles win from Eliza Omirou and MC Meredith over a duo from Vandy, 8-4, while freshman Anna Campana made her Wake Forest debut with a singles victory over Alee Clayton of Georgia. Carolyn Campana also made her Deacon debut with a win over Vandy's Emma Kurtz. Saby Nihalani rounded out the singles wins on Friday with a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Dasha Kourkina of Vanderbilt.
The Deacs won five of seven matches on Saturday. Carolyn Campana, Chandler Carter, Eliza Omirou, Lexi Franco and Anna Brylin all picked up two set victories over opponents from Clemson and Vanderbilt.
In the final day of action, Nihalani and Anna Campana were victorious on both the singles and doubles courts. Franco also earned a two-set win over Emma Kurtz of Vanderbilt. Peyton Pesavento capped the tournament with a three-set decision against Alee Clayton of Georgia.
Wake returns to action next weekend at the Battle of the Bay and the Debbie Southern Fall Classic, Sept. 20-22.
