ELON, N.C. – Facing a 2-0 deficit, Wake Forest volleyball (7-1) stormed back to take the next two sets and force its first fifth-set of the season at Elon on Saturday night. The Phoenix (4-5) outlasted the Deacs, taking the final set to the wire, 15-13.
Freshman Peyton Suess had a career-night with 18 kills, while Caroline Kuhn added 17 kills and a .586 hitting percentage. Madeline Holt added a season-best 45 assists to guide the offense.
Wake got off to a slow start offensively, hitting just .081 with just nine kills in the first set, while Elon took advantage with 15 kills and a .333 hitting percentage.
The Phoenix continued its momentum with a .500 clip in the second set, but the Deacons started to find their rhythm to set up a comeback. Behind Suess and Kuhn the Deacon offense sparked to take control of the third and fourth sets. Wake hit its stride and hit above .300 in the third and fourth stanzas, while holding the Phoenix to under.200.
In the final frame, Elon earned the first two points before a 4-0 run for the Deacs put Wake on top 4-2 forcing Elon to burn a timeout. The Phoenix responded, winning four of the next five points to regain the lead. Wake rallied back, but a 3-0 run for Elon sealed the victory for the Phoenix.
Wake returns to action next weekend at the George Mason Tournament. The Deacs will face host team George Mason on Friday at 7 p.m. and will take on William and Mary on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1:30 and 4:30, respectively.
