FAIRFAX, VA.- Wake Forest Volleyball improved to 8-1 on the year with a 3-0 sweep over George Mason in the first match of the Mason Invitational.

Peyton Suess had another strong showing for the Deacs with a team-best 17 kills. Madeline Holt recorded her third double-double of the year with 10 digs and 19 assists. Senior Caitlin Clarke also added 10 digs, defensively. Freshman Zoe Gonzales notched a team-high five assisted blocks at the net.

"George Mason is a physical team and comes at you with a lot of fire power, interim head coach Randi Smart said. "The defense did a nice job executing our game plan, both blocking and back row. It was a nice team win."

Wake hit just .170 on the night but held the Patriots to a .074 clip for the offensive advantage. The Deacs started slow with just seven kills in the first frame, while George Mason found the floor 10 times, however, Wake Forest posted 15 and 12 kills in the final two sets for a 34-31 kill advantage.

The Patriots took the first three points of the match, but Wake quickly bounced back to take control. Wake Forest went on a 14-2 run to take a 21-13 lead in the opening set. George Mason put a few more points on the board, but the Deacons followed through to win the first set 25-17 to take a 1-0 match lead.

The momentum stayed on the Deacons' side of the court in the second set as Wake scored four consecutive points to start the second frame. George Mason answered right back and both sides battled back and forth until a 4-1 run for the Deacons put Wake up 16-10. The Patriots continued to chip away, getting within three points, but Wake escaped with a 25-21 decision for the 2-0 match lead.

Wake Forest went on several strong runs in the third set and took a demanding 19-10 lead following a 9-1 run. George Mason rallied back, but it wasn't enough as a kill from Caroline Kuhn shut the door on the 25-18 win for the 3-0 sweep.

The Deacons will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 21 for a doubleheader against William and Mary and Seton Hall. First serve against the Tribe is set for 1:30 p.m. and will be followed by a 4:30 contest with the Pirates.
