The Demon Deacons (4-0) piled up 607 yards of total offense against the Phoenix (2-2) while limiting the visitors to just 183 yards of offense. Wake Forest's 607 yards of offense is the fifth-most in school history and the first game of 600+ yards of offense since the 2017 Belk Bowl against Texas A&M. The Deacons also recorded a school-record six passing touchdowns.
Quarterback Jamie Newman went 27-for-35 passing for 351 yards while tying a school-record with five touchdown passes. With 1,278 yards passing through the first four games, Newman is the first ACC quarterback to reach the 1,000-yard mark passing this season.
How it Happened:
Wake Forest scored its first touchdown of the day on a 4-yard strike from Newman to wide receiver Scotty Washington. After an Elon punt, the Deacons scored again with a 34-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jaquarii Roberson who darted between the secondary as Wake Forest took a two-touchdown lead. Elon added a 40-yard touchdown pass as the first quarter ended with the Deacons up 14-7.
Newman threw for his third touchdown of the day just minutes into the second quarter with a 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Sage Surratt. Later in the quarter, Newman hit Surratt to complete a 48-yard touchdown pass down the middle as Wake Forest held a commanding 28-7 lead going into halftime.
Washington caught his second touchdown of the day in the third quarter off a 31-yard pass from Newman for his fifth touchdown pass of the day.
Kenneth Walker scored a 20-yard touchdown run later in the frame as the Demon Deacons pushed its lead to 42-7. Backup quarterback Michael Kern threw his first-career touchdown in the fourth quarter with a 17-yard scoring pass to A.T. Perry for his first career touchdown catch. Wake Forest closed on the Phoenix in the fourth quarter to win 49-7.
