Deacs Down Boston College to Remain Unbeaten

9/28/2019 6:54:00 PM | Football

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 24 Wake Forest stayed undefeated on the season, winning its ACC opener 27-24 on Saturday at Boston College. The victory extends the Demon Deacons win streak to seven straight victories, tying the school record set in 1944.

Jamie Newman threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns and had his first career 100-yard rushing game with 102 yards on the ground to lead the Deacs. Wake Forest never trailed as they won their fourth straight ACC road game.

How It Happened: On the opening series, the Deacon defense got a turnover on Amari Henderson's second interception of the season. Wake converted off the opportunity with an 11-play drive that was capped by Cade Carney's 5-yard touchdown run, his first score of the season. The lead was extended to 10-0 on the Deacs' next drive as Nick Sciba converted a 22-yard field goal attempt. Wake Forest held that 10-0 lead after one quarter.

Early in the second quarter the Eagles got on the scoreboard with a 22-yard field goal from Aaron Boumerhi to cut the lead to 10-3. Boston College tied the game on its next possession, scoring on a 26-yard pass from Anthony Brown to Zay Flowers. A 50-yard run by Newman on a 3rd-and-1 set up a 6-yard pass to Surratt for the score, his school record seventh consecutive game with a touchdown catch, to give Wake a 17-10 lead. Boston College drew even in the final minute of the half on a 4-yard pass to David Bailey as the game was tied 17-17 at halftime.

After the Deacs got the ball on an interception from Essang Bassey, they tied a school record with a 20-play drive that resulted in a 22-yard field goal from Sciba to give Wake Forest a 20-17 lead. That was the only score of the quarter as the Deacs took a three-point lead into the final quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Boston College had a chance to tie the game. However, a delay of game penalty made a 43-yard field goal attempt into a 48-yard attempt, on which a bad snap caused a turnover on downs. Wake Forest extended the lead to 27-17 with 9:47 to play as Newman found Scotty Washington for a 27-yard touchdown.

Boston College cut the lead to 27-24 with 6:39 to play as Bailey executed a halfback pass to find Chris Garrison in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown.

Key Play: After Boston College had cut the lead to 27-24, the Deacs had crossed midfield when the Eagles started using their timeouts. On a 3rd-and-4 with 2:39 left, Newman found Jack Freudenthal for a 7-yard completion and a first down that allowed the Deacs to run more clock and leave BC with just 28 seconds when Maggio's punt was downed at the 5-yard line.

Stat Leaders: Newman was 21-for-33 passing for 243 yards and two touchdowns. He also lead the team in rushing with 102 yards. Kendall Hinton led Wake Forest with six receptions while Washington had five catches for a team-high 94 yards. Justin Strnad made a team-high 13 tackles to lead the Wake Forest defense.

Notes: The Deacs open a season 5-0 for the first time since 2006 … the road team has now won the last six meetings in the Wake Forest-Boston College series … Wake Forest has won five straight road games, its longest road win streak since 2006 … Jamie Newman ties the school best by winning eight of his first nine career starts at quarterback (Riley Skinner).

Up Next: Following a bye week, the Demon Deacons will return to action on Oct. 12 as they host Louisville at BB&T Field. Game time will likely be announced on Monday. Tickets are available on GoDeacs.com by clicking here.
