Women’s Tennis Succeeds at Battle in the Bay and Debbie Southern Fall Classic

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest women's tennis divided and conquered in two tournaments over the weekend. Anna and Carolyn Campana along with Lexi Franco and Chandler Carter competed at the Battle of the Bay in San Fransisco. MC Meredith, Eliza Omirou, Anna Brylin, Peyton Pesavento, Maddie Lynch and Saby Nihalani traveled to Furman for the Debbie Southern Fall Classic.
Battle of the Bay:
The Deacs had a strong showing on the West Coast in the Battle of the Bay. No. 47 Chandler Carter and Carolyn Campana were crowned main draw doubles champions after downing second-seeded and No. 57 Daria Kuczer and Lisa Zaar, 8-4. Carter and Campana defeated duos from Wisconsin and host team San Fransisco en route to their doubles title.
In singles play, Carter defeated Mya Bui of San Francisco 7-5, 6-1 to earn a spot in the Round of 16 but fell to Daria Kuczer in two sets on Friday evening.
Anna Campana picked up two early wins with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Abby Amos of Arizona in the round of 32 and delivered a huge 6-4, 6-0 victory over the fourth-seeded and No. 108 Denise-Antonella Stoica of Wisconsin to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. Campana kept the momentum rolling, flying past Estella Jaeger, 6-0, 6-2 to land in the semifinals.
Campana came out on top through a three-set battle with Kuczer, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-0 in the semis to advance to Sunday's main draw championship match where she would face Klara Kosan of Pacific. Kosan would go on to win the singles title, 6-4, 6-2.
No. 88 Carolyn Campana also had a strong showing as she defeated Chiho Mushika of San Francisco to move on to the Round of 16 where she picked up another dominant two-set win over Zoe Eberle-Clydesdale. In the quarterfinals, Campana dropped a gritty effort Klara Kosan, 6-4, 7-6(5).
In the Round of 32, Kosan also defeated Wake's Lexi Franco 6-2, 6-4.
Debbie Southern Fall Classic
In South Carolina, No. 101 Omirou kicked off the Debbie Southern Fall Classic with a three-set, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Reeka Mertena of Tennessee in flight two of singles play. She moved on to face Cameron Morra of North Carolina, but fell in another three-set battle to the in-state foe.
MC Meredith worked her way through flight nine of the singles main draw first defeating Sara Lizariturry of Mississippi State 7-6, 6-1. She followed with a three-set 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Hannah Zhao of Duke for a spot in the final. The senior was forced to retire against USC's Elise Mills in the deciding match after taking the first set.
In doubles, 23rd-ranked Omirou and Meredith earned an 8-6 victory over a pair from Tennessee, but fell to Duke 8-6. The duo went on to win the consolation match 8-4 over Drummy and Rosca of Vanderbilt.
Saby Nihalani and Brylin dropped their first doubles match, but bounced back to win the next two. The pair defeated Vandy's Meyer and Cruz 8-4 and edged USC's Chinellato and Cruz 8-7(2).
Peyton Pesavento and freshman Maddie Lynch also picked up several wins on the court together, first defeating a Clemson duo 8-7(2), before knocking out a pair from USC 8-3 for a spot in the finals for flight five. Florida State took the championship match 8-3 on Saturday.
Following a weekend off, the Deacs will return to action at the ITA All-American Fall Championships in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 5-13.
