Deacs Sweep UNF Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - Wake volleyball (6-0) continued its dominance on the court, defeating East Carolina (4-1) 3-0 in the final game of the UNF Invitational on Saturday morning. Wake has won 18 of 19 sets to open the season.
Freshman Peyton Suess paced the Deacon offense with 13 kills, while Caitlyn Della and Jaclyn Childress each added nine. Wake hit .374 for the match, while it held the Pirates to a .184 clip. Defensively, digs were even across the board, but Caitlin Clarke led the Deacs with eight. Wake Forest outblocked the pirates eight to four behind six total stops from Della.
The Deacs got off to a strong start, taking the firsts set 25-19. Wake hit a match high .438 behind four kills from senior Caroline Rassenfoss. Wake Forest took a 2-0 match lead behind a 25-18 decision in the second set. The offense hit .364 and held ECU to a match-low .143 hitting percentage.
Wake trailed for the first few plays of the third set, but a couple of solid runs put the Deacons back on top. The Deacs finished the match with 17 kills in the final frame with just three miscues.
Olivia Saunders, Caitlyn Della and Caitlin Clarke were named the All-Tournament Team.
Wake Forest returns to Reynold Gym on Saturday, Sept. 14 to host Furman. First serve is set for 7 p.m., and admission to all Wake volleyball games is free.
