Men’s Tennis Ranked Seventh in 2020 Preseason Poll

TEMPE, Ariz.- In the ITA's first release of national rankings for the 2020 season, the Wake Forest men's tennis team earned the No. 7 spot, the organization announced Wednesday (Jan. 8). Four singles players also finished the fall in the rankings. Updated spring singles and doubles rankings will be released on February 5.
The Deacons are coming off an ACC championship and an NCAA runner-up finish in 2019. Wake posted a 34-4 dual match record and went undefeated (12-0) in ACC play. The season was highlighted by three wins over ranked Virginia as well as top-10 victories over UCLA and North Carolina. The Deacs also finished runner-up in the National Team Indoor Championshhips.
Freshman Taha Baadi makes his Demon Deacon debut at No. 6 in the newcomer poll.
In the individual rankings, junior Bar Botzer leads the Deacs finishing the fall ranked No. 43 after winning the ITA Carolina Regionals and advancing to the Round of 32 at the National Fall Championships.
Rrezart Cungu follows Botzer in the rankings at No. 56, while sophomore Siddhant Banthia rounds out the individual singles rankings at No. 67 after a strong fall showing.
The Demon Deacons open the 2020 campaign on Saturday, Jan. 18, with a doubleheader against Coastal Carolina and Tennessee Tech at noon and 6 p.m., at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. The following weekend, the Deacs are set to host a pod of the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament and will welcome Penn State, Kentucky and ETSU to Winston-Salem for matches on Jan. 24 and 25.
