Anne van Hoof scored for the Demon Deacons
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Louisville broke a 1-1 tie, scoring early in the fourth quarter to defeat Wake Forest 2-1 on Saturday under rainy conditions at Kentner Stadium.
"I am super proud of our ability to work numbers around the ball," head coach Jen Averill said. "However, I thought we were a little loose and gave up way too many opportunities to a fantastic finishing team like Louisville. When you get defensive opportunities like that, you have to finish on the attacking side. That is an area that we are working on and getting stronger at, but we need to do a better job of playing off of our front foot and not being reactionary."
The Cardinals (5-0, 4-0 ACC) opened up the game scoring in the ninth minute as Erica Cooper tapped the ball in from close range with an assist from Madison Walsh. Both defenses battled for the remainder of the half as the Cards took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Wake Forest (1-3, 0-2 ACC) found an answer in the third quarter as Anne van Hoof fired a missile on a penalty corner directly from Alexis Grippo who inbounded the ball. Van Hoof read the play and patiently waited for her opportunity to clear some space and take the shot, evening the game 1-1.
Louisville's Emilia Kaczmarczyk handed the Cardinals the lead in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, connecting on a penalty corner from Alli Bitting and Meghan Schneider. Wake Forest was awarded two more corners in the final quarter, but couldn't convert.
The match featured 15 corner opportunities with eight for Louisville and seven from the Demon Deacons. After an eight-shot third quarter, including five corners, the Cardinals controlled a 12-10 shot advantage over Wake.
Freshman Ally Butler made her first career start in the cage for the Demon Deacons, making a career-best three saves.
Wake Forest and Louisville will meet again on the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 11 in a non-conference matchup. Game time is set for 2 p.m. and will air on RSN.
