Late Goal Lifts Syracuse over Wake Forest

Meike Lanckohr scored her first goal of the season for the Deacons
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest field hockey scored in the first three minutes of action, but a fourth quarter goal from the Orange handed Syracuse the 2-1 victory on Sunday at Kentner Field.
"We have to work on controlling the controllables," head coach Jen Averill said. "The squad got tired of doing what was successful and tried to go outside of the box and do some things differently. I thought we had Syracuse running well in the first half and we had a lot of pressure, but our ability to finish is a reccurring theme. We have to remain persistent and get some better spacing and create better opportunities."
Sophomore Meike Lanckohr scored her first goal of the season three minutes into the game on a pass from Eleanor Winants to give Wake Forest (1-4, 0-3 ACC) early momentum and a 1-0 lead. Syracuse (2-3, 2-2 ACC) answered back just two minutes later to even the game on an unassisted score from Charlotte de Vries.
Wake's defense held the Orange to just one shot in the first half, while the Demon Deacons controlled the offensive tempo with seven shots. Syracuse came out hot in the second half taking 11 shots to the Deacs' four.
After a two-quarter defensive battle, Cuse found the back of the net on an unassisted short-range goal from Carly Bothof, her first goal of the season, to give Syracuse the late 2-1 lead.
The Demon Deacons took 11 shots to Syracuse's 12, but Wake had a 7-5 penalty corner advantage. Lanckohr led Wake's offensive attack with three shots, while Abby Carpenter and Anne van Hoof each added two.
Ally Butler earned her third start in the cage for the Demon Deacons, making one stop, while Syracuse's Syd Taylor made three saves.
Wake and Syracuse will be back in action Oct. 19 at noon. The game will air on ACCNX with Jonathon Hoppe and Kelsey Gill on the call.
