The Demon Deacons’ forward scored his fourth goal of the year to give Wake Forest a 1-0 overtime victory in a top-three matchup.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Junior Kyle Holcomb took a perfectly placed cross from sophomore Omar Hernandez to head home the game-winning goal in the 97th minute to give Wake Forest (4-1-0, 2-1-0) a 1-0 victory over North Carolina (2-1-0, 2-1-0) on Sunday night at Spry Stadium.
The goal was Holcomb's fourth of the season, as he now leads the Demon Deacons in scoring. Additionally, it was the 10th overtime victory for Wake Forest under head coach Bobby Muuss.
"I challenged the guys even in overtime [that] someone's going to have to step up and do something special to win the game," Muuss said. "We played against a Carolina team that hadn't conceded a goal this season even in their preseason match, so to get it the way we did, I thought it was a good team goal. Several players involved and then an individual effort in a great service and then an individual effort for Kyle just to be so brave."
In the 33rd minute, senior Justin McMaster made his 2020 season debut for the Demon Deacons. McMaster -- who was making his 58th career appearance for Wake Forest -- played 29 minutes in the contest.
Late in regulation, redshirt junior goalkeeper Andrew Pannenberg made a game-saving save with less than a minute left in the second half. It was his only save of the night.
The night served as the Genna Wiley Memorial Match, with nearly $4,000 raised for breast cancer research.
The Demon Deacons will return to road action on Friday night when Wake Forest faces Duke at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. Duke (2-3-0, 2-2-0) is coming off a 2-1 double overtime defeat at the hands of Clemson on Friday.
After not facing off last season, this will be the first match between the two since Sept. 29, 2018. The Demon Deacons have won the three matchups.
